V8S Windscreen Washers (+oil filter)

Hi,

I got a free MOT and oil service voucher thrown in with my KWIKFIT insurance (cheapest on confused.com) so used them on my V8S yesterday.

1) It only failed on the windscreen washers not working....but they had no idea how to fix it! I've brought the car home but not sure what to do now (10 days grace for a retest). I can't even remember filling up the screenwash before. Any ideas on how to test/fix the washers? (Afraid I'm not that handy though).

2) He also wriggled out of doing the oil by saying COMPUTERSEZNO when trying to find the correct oil filter to fit. Checking these forums I found Land Rover ERR3340 suggested as suitable. Is that the only part or can others be used? (so I can pin him down).

I'd like to fix the washers myself if possible (failing that find an independent) and take it back within the 10 days and get them to do the oil as well.

Can't help with the filter, mine is a V6 - but watch that you don't get a filter that's too long - for example on the V6 you have to get a short flat filter because the "standard" one fouls the chassis.

For the washer, first thing you need to establish is - is it an electrical or mechanical fault?

Does the pump on the washer bottle work? If yes then the pipes must be blocked somewhere - you just have to check them through. If no you need to test if the motor is getting a supply (pull off the pump cable and put a wee bulb and a bit of wire across the ends - if the bulb light when you "wash" then you have sparks). Also make sure the connectors on the pump and on the ends of the wires are reasonably clean - if they are dirty and green then the wee sparks can't get through.

If so then you know that the pump is knacked - try giving it a direct feed and earth from the battery and see if it works - if no then its definitely the pump, if it works that way, then you have a wiring problem. They can be a bugger, you just have to follow the wiring route - it's most likely to be a fuse, the washer switch or the pump itself.

On the washers front - firstly just get a sewing needle and rod the washer jet eye - a tiny piece of crub from the iternals of those 15 year old pipes can easily clog the hole. Mine do it all the time..... as to the oil filter I don't know sorry.

Do TVR car parts (other parts suppliers are available - to avoid fouling new fangled posting rules ) list a suitable filter that the part number can be read off

I note from an old service sheet the genuine oil filter part number is ERR3340

If you just clean the jets from outside all you're doing is pushing the dirt back inside so it will block the jet again.

The best solution I know of is to abandon the original washer jets and fit some spray bars onto the wiper blades.

The V8S oil filter is FRAM PH5443 or equivalent.

They are Peugeot, I forget which model. I expect there are lots of alternatives these days.

Indeed I agree wholeheartadly but at least it does prove the fault.

I'd love spray bars on my wipers, but until I can justify the dashboard removal to do it properly etc I'll have to stick with my occasional needle approach.

No dashboard removal needed - simply snip the hose before it passes through the bulkhead and run it directly to the wipers.
