Misfire Under Load (2nd Gear Only)

I'm now regularly enjoying the car I bought in Feb - so much fun and superior to my old TR6 in nearly every respect.

However................i've discovered a misfire when I really floor it in second - it doesn't occur in any other gear and only when you clog it. When the misfire clears you get what sounds like unburnt fuel popping all along the exhaust. Sounds quite mean but would rather have seamless pick-up.

Should I be looking at the AFM's or electrics?

If it runs ok the rest of the time then I'd be tempted to look at ingnition electrics, especially the high tension side - the coil and spark is working hard in those conditions so any resistance can make a difference.

I would make sure that the inside and outside of the distributor cap is clean, and check that there are no deposits on the contacts inside the distributor cap. I would also check the outer distributor cap connectors.

check that the rotor arm is clean and that there are no deposits on that.

how old are the plugs? Do then need gapping or renewal?

how old are the leads? Might be time for renewal!

I had the same symptoms on my old S3, a rolling road session solved it and more. Apparently the fuelling and timing were quite a way out. cost £140 but well worth it (gained 10 bhp and 30lbs torque)

I had this a little while ago and having went through changing all the usual suspects plugs, leads, dizzy cap etc etc it turned out to be timing so worth checking this first before splashing out the cash.
