Posted originaaly in the wrong place:

Took the TVR for its MOT yesterday and it failed because the front wheel bearing is "noisy"

The tester agrees that there is no play in the bearing. He agrees that it doesn't even feel rough. When you spin the wheel, he says it's noisy. If you put your ear 1/2 inch from the wheel you can just hear a slight whisper from the bearing.

I tried to persuade him to an advisory but he says it's a fail.

I've ordered new bearings for £20, and I'll change it in a day, and the old MOT doesn't expire till 3rd June, so I'm not overly bothered, but I've checked the MOT Tester Manual and although it mentions testing for bearing play, I can't see where it says anything about "noise" on its own, being a fail.

Last year he failed it only because when you had the back lights, the fog lamps, the brake lamps and reverse lamps all on at the same time, and then put the indicators on, the other lights dimmed amost imperceptibly in time with the flashes. I fixed that in 5 minutes with a bit of emery paper on the contacts. Wheel bearings take a little longer!

I think I need to find another MOT centre!

If it is just a very slight noise and no roughness I think I would do an advisory or maybe nothing at all. In the MOT manual the noise not being mentioned is a bit like masonic scriptures, they are passed by word of mouth.wink
As for your lights last year, why didn't you check them and fix them before the test?

The downer with your current fail is that you'll probably be hit with a fresh test fee or at least partial fee.

I did! I just didn't have the rear lamps, fog lamps, brake lamps and indicators all on at the same time - and even then the dimming was only just noticeable...

I did notice that they didn't do that particular test this time too...

From the testers manual

How to inspect

The inspections, under this sub-section, must be carried out with the vehicle over a pit or on a raised lift. For many of these inspections an assistant must be used.

Method of Inspection

I. See the Suspension type diagram for the Jacking positions of various suspension types,
Jack up the front of the vehicle so that the front wheels are clear of the ground.

Reason for rejection

1. Excessive movement

There's a bit more to it than that.

Update:

Changed the wheel bearing yesterday, passed MOT this morning so I'm a happy scone again.

Once I got the hub carrier off the car, I could hear a slight roughness in the bearing - not so obvious on the car but there you go.

Oddly, the slight "chirp" I used to hear occasionaly (thinking it was the brake pads) seems to have gone now too...
