I've been looking at the alternative parts list and some old threads - with QSJ765 and QSJ768 both mentioned on the threads, problem is I couldn't figure out which one is the one I want!

Don't know the part number, but see when you do get one, could you post details and a photo? I was going to change mine when I did the wheel bearing but I couldn't get the old one off after taking the 3 bolts out, and I wasn't sure just where to hit it!

There was a debate about this a while back and someone posted a picture of the 765 and 768 joints with the fixing holes dimensioned. I think it may have been pies but I can't see that pic on tvrsseries.com.

I have an SJ768 balljoint, at least thats the marking on the bag, it isn't a QH part and I haven't actually tried it to see whether it fits. For what its worth the fixing holes are on approx 49/50mm (short sides) and 64/65mm centers, the central boss is 40mm diameter. IIRC the fixing hole dimensions of the 765 and 768 parts are quite a bit different so you should be able to tell which you might need by measuring up the wishbone.

Once you've got the 3 bolts out its only paint and accumulated muck holding it to the wishbone. A few gentle taps on the underside of the joint should free it, I'd split the taper joint on the bench.

Slightly off topic but I found this which seems too useful to ignore.
Its a list cross referencing QH part numbers with other manufacturers, downloadable as a PDF.

I got the taper joint apart on the car. I also got the three wee bolts out. Then I hit it and levered it in every direction I could reach, but it wouldn't budge. It was as though there was something else holding it on, but there isn't.

I wasn't that bothered that time, my priority was fixing the bearing for the MOT next day.

Andrew I think it must have been the circular bit underneath rusted into the corresponding hole on the wishbone.
I undid the 3 bolts and it literally came straight off - I know there have been some issues where the balljoint won't fit the wishbone as the circular bit underneath doesn't line up very well - maybe yours is a tight fit and was 'persuaded' to fit.

Incidentally has anyone had a bottom ball joint fail?

Mine feel perfect but I will be replacing them anyway - we seem to have quite a few instances of top ones going but I don't recall any reports of bottom ones going.

I changed all my ball joints on the V8s during the winter, the part numbers where;

Top ball joints aquired from Andrew Page for £15.19 ea part No TC125 fit perfectly

Bottom ball joints aquired from unipart automotive for £ 8.50 ea part No FPSFB5050 fit perfectly.

Track rod ends aquired from Andrew Page for £8.50ea part No FPSFTR4040 fit perfectly.

Hope the above helps anybody.

Pete

Pete

Would it be a good idea to add to alternate parts list?

Please be careful as several of your Griff and Chimaera brothers have had the bottom ball joint fail when fitting pattern parts because the misalignment angle is different. i.e. the ball joint doesn't move as much as the original. It fits fine but when driving, the ball joint locks out, damages the housing until it breaks with disastrous results!

What Steve means is that the new balljoint doesn't lean over at such a large angle as the original balljoint.
Not an issue on the original donor vehicle but it on the TVR.
Compare old and new balljoints carefully.

I think it was someone on the chim forum had a balljoint let go while he was driving it due to this reason, it broke the bottom cup part of the joint, fortunately noone was hurt but it could have been much worse.

Incidentally my local factor is quoting £8.12 + Vat for QH QSJ765S joints

Chris

I have checked the ball joints tonight and taken some pics. All appears fine and the car has covered approx 500 miles since rebuild.

Near side ball joint;

Off side ball joint

The car was sat on its wheels, all seems fine to me.

Hope it helps

Pete.
