Disaster !!!

Loss of power and I had a rocker cover gasket leaking, so Ill sort that out and have a look inside to make sure that nothing silly is going on, I have found a lower broken cam tensioner blade - Cosworth 24v engine - to remove the cover you have to remove the sump, therefore I think its an engine out job. So thats me out for s club 7, Im absolutely gutted.

I've got a can of midnight oil if you want it to help you fix it, and a candle that burns at both ends!

Is there no way to do it Sean without removing the sump?
Do you need to take the sump off or is it a case of it may damage the sump gasket when you remove the front cover?
Might be worth seeing if you can remove the front cover before you take the engine out - you have nothing to lose as far as I can see.

Still with all that work over the winter you shouldn't have any seized bolts to deal with . Seriously I know how you feel wrt SCH - I probably wouldn't have made it anyway, but the gearbox rebuild meant I didn't even chance my arm with the missus. Save that for later

Hi all - so the parts I need to fix my car are not available for approx 4 weeks as they have to be made. I could have done with a walnut when I lifted the rocker cover off and saw the mess - that would have saved the 10mm spanner which has gone somewhere. Im looking at a chimera on ebay now, Should I ?

Sean - why not wait for the parts, and just come to S Club in your daily drive, I'm sure we can blag a couple of hoon passenger seats for you and your son.
The only downside is you'll have to pay to get in, but think of the fuel that you'll save

Calm down - calm down, how long do I have to stay on the naughty step for, Griff then ? I really dont want to go in a CRV - which after Satuday engine problem, I reversed it (the CRV) into a post on Sunday - so it really wasnt my weekend - mind you Im starting to chirp up a bit now, facing the task - ironic that I was bored and went to look at a sorry looking S3 on Saturday - which the chap is now considering selling - ive got enough work on now - if Im really lucky I can have lots of cars that dont work.

I may consider going up in my boring car.

Sean, have you tried Barry at xr4i spares centre? He seems to be the specialist when it comes to obsolete parts for the 24V Cosworth, especially the valve cover gaskets and chain tensioner. Nice bloke too.

Hi Ron - Barry was my first port of call - he has very type of tensioner apart from the one I need !, and they havent started manufacturing them yet, the front of the engine is accessable for cam cover removal, so no need for engine out, I will see the full damage tomorrow when the front cam covers come off.

Might be worth a visit to you local Ford main dealer once you've worked out which bits you need. I use one near to me and the service has been superb, parts they don't have in stock are tracked down on the national database and ordered in. I've placed orders late afternoon and had calls before 8am the next morning to tell me they are awaiting collection.

Must admit its all been for fairly mundane V6 bits and pieces but they've always managed to find what I've needed.

Hi all - So the engine front cover is off, every tensioner and guide is broken, the No 1 cam shaft position has changed by 3 teeth - that means head off to check for damage, therefore it is engine out and complete tear down and might as well do a complete rebuild, little & big end bearings. At least Ill have a known engine after, shame its this time of year. Unless someone knows where a good quality engine is. Barkychoc do your stuff and sniff me a good one out, BOA 24v. Mine has the one long double chain.

Do they contact?? some of the early Ford engines (Pinto) didn't, untill Ford redesigned them to.Progress hey!!

yes I believe they can touch, as it slipped backward - I have been told I may be lucky !

Don't remove the heads - retime the cams and get a compression tester they are dead cheap
low compression reading = bent valves, probably cheaper to get a complete engine and flog or keep yours for spares
good compression reading = you lucky bd you've got away with it

Engine out, heads off, no damage and worth rebuilding the cost -


Hydraulic tensioner £82
Alloy main blade £142 (Sports - very low wearing)
Guides £76
Engine gasket set £116 (more robust than the ebay ones)
Sump gasket set £32
One packet of walnuts £1.28

So about £500 at the moment.

I could not do a compression test as all guides and blades where in pieces and when the heads came off, half of the waterways where blocked - so worth doing, plus it would be my luck that the head gaskets failed the day after putting it in.

Ill check the big end bearings during the week, but I cant feel any slop, so looking good.
