Smells of fuel

As I live in Luxembourg with no TVR expertise, I need your help and advice. My TVR S2 2.9 suddenly started to run progressively rougher and now backfires and smells a lot of fuel. It idles but when you put your foot down it doesn't like it at all (it frightens the neighbours). I have changed the throttlepot and its no better. The garage thinks it could be the ECU, but they are not really any better than me.

Has any one got any ideas or I will have to sell as I use it normally every day to drive to work

Check it hasn't got any air leaks on the pipes from the air flow meters to the plenum.
Could be a dirty air flow meter, amongst other things.
Try swapping the leads over to the airflow meters to see if the issue changes.

My S2 had similar problems a few years back which could only be avoided by unplugging the throttle pot. This puts the ECU into get you home mode (or LOS, Limited Operating Stragegy to give it Ford's posh name) which should, if the problem is sensor or wiring related, give much better running than what you have at the moment. Eventually I tracked the problem down to an intermittent connection in the engine wiring loom connector that sits above the right hand rocker cover. After replacing the connector and loom with another one from the breakers (Ford could not supply a new one)
all the rough running disappeared even with the TP reconnected.

It sounds like the throttle pot is wired backwards. Check the connections and be aware that the colours on the loom and the colours on the connector may not match - and if they do they may not necessarily connect together!!
