Diff out !!!

Replacemet Diff arrived this morning just after power went off in house so I couldnt do any work ... Honest ! So I cleaned up the "new" diff, drained the remaining oil, added about a quarter pint of new GL4 and drained it again to "flush".
Then I kind of started jacking the car up and removing the wheels

and before I knew what I was doing I started to remove the old diff... you know how it is when you have an itch...
removed exhaust
prop shaft bolts next
Four carrier bolts - one is the wrong length so will need to be replaced.
Torx bolts next - T45's and all came off no problem
finally the four nuts on the rear carrier.

Thats it ! its off and a quick inspection showed that the rear carrier was shot and there is a lot of play compared to the replacement, so I'm happy with the progress so far... note different size carrier on the other diff I got (the LSD one)

Kevin, on mine one of the diff to carrier bolts was also shorter (drivers side front I think)

3 x M12 @ 50mm
1 x M12 @45mm

Its all in the bolt list

Can you check as you do it that the V6 bolts are as listed for the V8 - apart from the rear diff mount which is totally different - so if you get chance can you measure those bolts and either you or I add them to the list.

Interesting about the shorter bolt, it was the top N/S that was different on mine, but the difference was the head (it was the same length as the others ... ?) I'll pop into the ford dealer tomorrow and try and figure it out then. I will amend/add to the list if needed.

It might be on mine, I've had the bolts out and could have got them mixed up.
I'll find out when I try to put it back!

Kevin, I think the difference in the rear carrier size is because the one TVR used was off the Sierra and the replacement you have is from the Granada. I replaced mine with new from TVR carparts (they had three left when I bought mine in Nov last year) but the sierra ones are rarer than the indicators now!!

Replacement diff in now... just waiting for the rain to clear and I'll give her a spin...

CV joints have wear but not too bad

Torx bolts were no bother

Chris - you were right about one of the front carrier bolts being 45 mm long only (the head sits in a cup of the front carrier on the drivers side - presumably for clearance - you can just about see what I mean here...

I've been away for a few days and went to Anglesey for the TVRCC Challenge yesterday so only had a quick look today. Taken the hoses off the plenum and given the butterfly spindles a good blast with carb cleaner which has made some difference so maybe that's where the problem is. I'll have another quick look in the next few days but the need is to drive the car at the moment with the current decent spell of sun.
