My gearbox has been whining on the overrun for a while now and I have to face the fact that it will have to come out and have something done with it, probably over the winter now. Steve Heath's book says that later models were fitted with the MT75 box. I was wondering if anyone does indeed have this box on their car and if so how it compares in size to the type N/9 box. Has anyone converted to the MT75, especially in an S2

I'd like to think about doing this as I'm told the MT75 is a stronger box, although I'm not sure how it is for shift quality.

Cheers

I reckon the MT75 could be an urban myth - lots of talk about them but I don't think anyone (knowingly) has one.

Anyway Ant if you do decide to go this route, someone mentioned on the Griff or Chim Forum that there is a place that will make you a propshaft up - you tell them whats on each end and how long and they send it in the post.
The downside is I can't find the post.

There is quite a bit on the gearboxes on the Ford forums. I did look at this when mine went but all the advice said "more trouble than its worth" so I took mine out and had it overhauled. The gearbox is now far better, smooth, easy changing and quiet. My noise started with a whine/rumble on the overrun and got worse quite quickly. It turned out to be main bearing failure necessitating main and layshaft replacement as well due to damage. Also had all synchros done and the fourth gear wheel changed as it was not as snug a fit on the shaft as I'd have liked.

Good luck

I will be rebuilding my type 9 gearbox when I rebuild the car and although its expensive I will be going for the first gear convrsion from Burton power which takes the 1st gear down from 3.65:1 to 2.98:1.

Thanks chaps

I have toyed with the idea of the longer first and an uprated type 9 as well...and also a sequential type 9, but they are damn expensive and not quite in character either. I believe the MT75 is a bit bulkier as well so it may not be an option. Has anyone used Competition transmission services for their work?...they seem to have quite a good reputation but all I know of them is their uprated FWD gearboxes.

Cheers

yes
I believe that this was something TVR intended to do, but never actually got around to.
