Took the S out yesterday and(luckily) didn't get very far at all before the car completely died. Instant diagnosis was get a can of fuel in it - these fuel gauges aren't that accurate. Anyhooo, that didn't help and the car still refused to start...it would, however, fire occasionally, fluff a little then die. After leaving it a while I realised the fuel pump wasn't whirring on switch-on as usual. The fuse is ok, the relay still clicks after 2-3 seconds but no pump whirring. Any ideas?
Have I dragged crap up from the tank, could the connectors be loose or is my pump dead? Anyone experienced similar and where would you start?

My brother had a very similar problem with his pre-cat griff.

My v8s did this to me last week, I was in a bit of a rush so I just ran a wire from the battery out through the number plate light and down to the pump. When I got round to looking at it properly a few days later every relay and fuse tested fine, wired it back in properly turned the key and it was fine.
I put mine down to having worked on another car and it being jealous. (either that or the connection onto the pump being a bit loose and dirty)

How noisey was the pump before it stopped working? I had similar issues a year or two ago....my missus said that pump sounds noisey....I said it always sounds like that woman....soon afterwards it packed up! I bought a new bosch pump, fitted it, and now its barely audible.
Hi Mark, the pump is quite noisy when priming. Otherwise, pretty quiet. Having said that, once the car's started I can't really hear much anyway. I'll be checking the contacts first, then take it from there. Thanks all.

The commonest fault is that the relay mounted on the circuit board in the "fuel pump relay" has overheated and desoldered itself on the output connections. You can hear it click but there is no connection.
Dismantle the relay and check the soldering on the PCB.
Or, buy a new relay from your local motorfactors, one cost me about £20. Dismantle the relay and check the soldering on the PCB.
Rangerover no longer stocked them

I have heard / seen this problem so many times, I bet it is the relay.

Hi I had a similar issue, no fuel, there was power to the pump and a pulsing when the pump had power, went to the scrapyard got another pump - same issue no fuel, changed the injector relay, then pump relay, then inertia switch fuse, checked pipes not blocked and a free flow of fuel to the pump, still no fuel.
You need to take a 12v direct feed to the pump and confirm if it is working, I disconnected the pipes at the front of the engine and placed them in a container, these pumps will pump all day long with a direct feed, I was unlucky enough to buy a siezed pump from the scrappy and lost a week trying to work out the problem, a new pump was £56 and if I did the direct feed method it would have clearly shown the issue.
Good luck

Last time I went to buy a new fuel pump relay (many years ago...) they said "we've got a box full of dead ones"Z
So I helped myself to a handful and resoldered them all. Never had to buy one since

I think John's course of action as above would be the best option as it will confirm that the pump is actually working, if not, you can then look eldsewhere. At this point I wouldn't bother disconnecting the pipes, initially I would just listen for the whirring.Sean

The pump is easy enough to change, with the rear wheel off, the part name came off the alternative parts list and the one I brought was off an Audi A4 pt no 893-906-091E. It was larger in diameter than the old one, so I had to use thinner rubber to hold it on the clamp, oddily enough my local pub has rubber bar mats approx 1mm thick (sorry Ade - hope you dont read this, but your a tight git and would have charged me).
The reason I disconnected the pipes, is when the pump reached pressure it stops wurring and as I found myself going in circles, changed injector, fuel relays and inertia switch I wanted to see the fuel pumping to be sure of obstructions etc and state of the fuel.
Good luck Sean

I've ordered a new fuel pump but am still not sure if there is an inertia switch fitted to S2's. If anyone knows where it can be found, I'd be forever grateful.
AFAIK I don't think TVR fitted it. Steve Heath doesn't mention it in the Bible and he should know, having inverted an S!
