My fuel gauge illumination has never worked since I aquired the car almost a year ago (1989 S2) and I'm starting to get a little annoyed by it as its the only guage that doesn't light up and possibly the most important one in such a thirsty car. Rarely, the gauge appears to read reasonably accurately so it would be nice to be able to see it at night. The dash is the S1 / S2 type with the arc-shaped warning lights panel. I have tried to access the rear of the guage by going in next to the drivers left knee but this is impossible. Having asked Offord Motors to have a go at the last service they said they couldn't do it without ripping the entire dash out! Any ideas?

Probably just the bulb behind the gauge, but the dash will have to be taken out to replace it. I'll trade you: you can have a working light but no working gauge, and I'll have it the other way.

Remove the panel above the footwell, probably houses your cigar lighter, you should be able to access the rear of the gauge from there.

If you want to make it even easier then take the speedo out and go in through the hole for that ;-)
