Following on from Kevins post, I didnt spot anything obvious on Flushing Oils.
At my previous company we owned a Transit Diesel Van which had a Crankshaft failure at 70k Miles (not very good but consistent with the rest of the vehicle ie Crap)We had been having all the servicing done at an independent Garage who stuck to the rules and used all Ford Parts to keep within the warranty agreement from Ford. The engine was returned to Ford for inspection along with the service records, and it was determined that the engine would not be replaced under warranty as the garge which did the servicing had used an "Engine Flush" 2 services ago and this was in contravention of their rules, when checked this was proven to be correct.
SO my question is can I use a flushing oil on the 2.9 Cologne engine without fear of wrecking one of Henry's best?? I am assuming it is, as it is an older design and is built to lesser tolerances but someone may know different and maybe even tell me why it is Taboo on the later engines.

Why do you want to flush it in the first place? Modern oils contain detergents so would help to clean it. You may end up releasing all sorts of crap all in one go with a flush and it isn't certain to come out of the drain plug first time around.

I've stripped my 97k miler and there was no crud in it at all. I'd say that if it looks clean with no sludge under the rocker covers then the rest will be ok.

What's prompting you to want to flush it out?

Personally (don`t know why you are thinking of flushing ?) I would not use an engine flush, as long as oil & filter are changed regular this should suffice!

I was thinking that at 104k Miles it would probably be getting gunged up in the oil ways and that an engine flush would clear it a bit, from the replies I take it no one thinks its a good idea and I accept that, but then when do you use an engine flush?

Oilways have oil flow to clean them. The crap collects where oil settles and then bakes ie around the heads and valley. Crud won't settle in the oilways when it's getting 50 psi of pressure. If there was crud there your bearings would have spun by now. Imo, stick to regular oil changes and use something decent, oh and run the engine up to temperature or don't drive it.
