my V8s started playing up on the drive towards TITT 3 yesterday. it was running superbly in the morning. When i got to London and started it again, the revs got stuck about 2.5k and refused to drop until i engaged the clutch a drove for a few seconds. This happened twice. Then the car would run fine until i get to a traffic light then it would cut out. it would then refuse to start for about 2 minutes. then it would run fine through a few traffic lights and starts again. I nursed the car home with the problem, parked it for an hour, and it was idling perfectly again. i know the problem is still there. can anybody please help.

NB thanks to the guys at TITT3 who waited and ensure i was fine when the car cuts out.

Not too sure if this is relevent to your problem but I was talking to someone with a Griff 4L recently and asking about any general problems; he said that he had had to clean the stepper motor a few times. He said the sign it needed doing on his car was when the tickover went up to about 1.5K so could be worth trying.

You can rule out the stepper motor by pulling the lead off while the engine is running - it then won't be able to adjust the idle speed - some of the griff/chim boys leave it disconnected though it can tend to stall when its cold - once it is warmed up its fine.

If you disconnect it then the stepper can't adjust the idle speed up or down, it should stay the same when warmed up.
So what should actually happen when you disconnect it is.... nothing!
If you leave it disconnected then when the engine is cold there might not be quite enough air getting through to keep the engine running and it may have a tendency to stall till its a bit warmer, but thats all.

If it still plays up with the stepper disconected then I think you can rule it out.
All the stepper does is adjust how much air gets through a hole - the equivalent of a tiny bit of accelerator.
The idle speed control is very slow witted anyway even if its working properly - its 80's technology.

You haven't replaced the stepper have you?
I bought a cheap identical looking one off ebay and it didn't work - I put the old one back in and it was fine.

Also - does your speedo work properly as the speedo signals are used by the ECU to determine whether the car is moving or not - although my speedo was playing up when I took it to bits and it didn't seem to have too much of an adverse effect on the running of the engine.

speedo seems fine. i will try and rule the steeper out. thanks for the explanation. i have not bought or checked the cay since yesterday. i had to nurse the car on the drive home by blipping the throttle every time i stopped until i got unto the motorway. as soon as i stopped to maneuver onto my driveway, it stalled again so i left it for a while. started it up about an hour later and parked it straight into the garage.

Well, pushing a TVR is better than not having one. I had to push mine through customs at Dunkirk. That took a bit of explaining laugh

Disconnected the stepper today. car was running at constant rev so i decided to give it a clean. It had carbon deposit. Car now running smoothly (fingers crossed). weather permitting, i will take it for another blast tomorrow.

My V8S had a spell of cutting out and refusing to restart. Initially this was intermittent and then became more frequent. It only occured when the engine was well warmed up.

After trying various things it turned out to be the fuel pump relay becoming too hot and failing which in turn was because the fuel pump was clogged with silt and demanding too high a current from the relay.

If this happens to your car, first change the fuel filter as this may be blocked. If that fails then the fuel pump will probably have to be changed. As a get you home measure you can change the hot relay for another (cold one) very easily which should keep you going for a few miles. This is located in the passenger footwell and is shown in Steve Heath's Bible.
