What Idiot Designed That Then?
Discussion
My drivers door mirror went all floppy yesterday - about as much use as a packet of three at a nyphomaniacs convention - so I thought I'd better fix it.
After a browse through the threads on here and armed with a hacksaw, an allen key and a diminishing sense of humour I tightened it up.
But why on earth does the allen bolt tighten up in the place where the gap between the door and the mirror casting is smallest? Why not at the point where you could use a full size allen key?
Or is it just me and is there an easier way?

Mark,
Yes, I used an old allen key and hacksawed the short end shorter so that it will fit in to the bolt and leave the handle almost flush with the casting. I inserted when the mirror was turned round making the head visible then when adjusted / tightened it will lift out if your careful. I also had to shorten the handle end to make it turn behind the mirror stem.
Ah well, next time it will be easier.

I gave up on trying to tighten mine with an Allan key after about 4 hours of failing. In the end, and given that the mountings are still available from Neil at ML Performance I decided to drill a new accessible hole on my drivers side mirror. Given how easy it is to crack these I was very cautious, but I did it and it is now held in place by a self tapping screw in the hole I created. You cannot see the self tapper as it is covered by the plastic cover, and if it falls out (unlikely) i just put another one in. I am now tempted to do the passenger side one, but as it is not too floppy yet I will wait until I can no longer effectively use it!
