Can anyone shine any light on the reasons why my V8S stops accelerating in fourth and fifth gear at about 5,000 revs - it just dies fourth at about 95 and fifth at about 120

Don't understand why it would be so consistent in some gears and not others. But I've had kind of similar symptoms in the V8S when the throttle pot had worn out - the engine would die completely sometimes when I had my foot to the floor, often after a few seconds of full power, then a few seconds later it would cut back in again. Made sweeping sliproads *very* interesting. Can't imagine why it would happen to wear out at that particular position though ...

Mine died around the idle 2K positon, says a lot about the car uses , however you can safely assume that since the new pot it will not wear out at such lowly positions again

Lack of power
Seriously have you had it check out, when mine was blowing past the valves it made a lot of noise but didn't have any go, particulary in the higher gears.

Sounds like lack of power to me too.

It seems strange that you get no drop off in lower gears, but I would suspect the lack of power would be less apparent in lower gears anyway.

Could be any number of things, coil would be a good thing to check (i had similar problems with a cheap after aftermarket one in my golf, but in all gears), plugs, HT leads and fueling (fuel pressure may be tailing off). All of these should show up on a diagnostic test.

Once you have eliminated the easier things to fix(fingers crossed), you can check out the more expensive things.

Hope that helps,

Z

Out of interest, Mark, where is the Red Line on a V8S? (Yes, I know it's on the tachometer, I mean, at what revs )

Careful with that 'and a bit beyond', as well. The hydraulic lifters on the Rover lump don't like going too fast...

a bit above 5K I think , most seem to have the limiter set at around 6-6.25K, although there are some out there set at 5.6K . If its fully balanced etc then by all means keep it to 5.5-6K max, but an occasional blat into 6K country is not going to kill it IMHO, they are not made of chocolate unlike some more modern engines .

Harry

PS I realise this comments is probably an in-joke between you two btw

It used to be at around 7.5 to 8k - you could feel it coming in at about 160mph

Thanks guys - like the sound of lack of power - does that mean it might get quicker - will get a diagnostics done and let you know what I find !

Mine red lines at 6,000. It reaches it 6,000 easily enough and once exceeded the hydraulic lifters pump up and do their job well (inducing loss of power/uneven running) cured by quickly changing up.

Certainly, that's true, but it might be worth a look at this

I think this is an undesirable side effect, they are not intended to act as a rev limiter!

I think that may be a Ford V6 not a RV8, non-the-less they are not made of chocolate either, normally bomb(ish) proof

Forgive my ignorance - could the diagnostic check be done at any garage or would it need to be a TVR garage
