Hi,
I've got a TVR, the silencer is a bit of a stupid shape, a square type thing that must restrict exhaust flow and I fancied a bit more noise so i'm looking at doing away with the standard box and bolting on twin 3" cherrybombs. Has anybody changed their silencer to cherrybombs or know somebody with them. I'm trying to gauge the sort of noise increase to expect, obviously I don't want it ridiculous because of my poor neighbours. Its a 2.9 V6 if that makes any difference.

Cheers

Be careful, I once fitted a very free flow exhaust to a carb fed Rover V8 and it lost a load of power. Some engines need a certain amount of back pressure to work correctly.

its a common mod for the RV8 chaps - Chims and Griffs alike though I'm not sure how easy/hard it is on a V6 system. Have you tried posting in the S forum?

Depends on the quality of the cherry-bombs and the design. Custom Chrome are fine, the rest (apart from real American ones) are a big pile of arse.

Look for a set with the holes in the inner pipe punched outwards, like Custom Chrome. Cheapo items have the holes punched inwards, meaning that the metal swarf projects into the exhaust stream, creating a rough surface that actually reduces power.

The noise reduction is done by Rockwool-like wadding between the inner pipe and silencer casing. Therein lies the problem. Over time the wool fibres work their way out through the inner pipe holes and get blown away by the exhaust gases. So eventually silencing capability is reduced to nowt.

Cherry bombs are cheap, though, so either get re-packable ones or fit them so they are easily removable for replacement.

On the plus side they can be loud as hell, and sound MEAN!!

i once fitted one to my ginetta which had a straight through exhaust with just the expansion box in the middle, in a effort to quiet it down a bit.

fitted cherrybomb exhaust which had been kicking around in the shed. and it made no difference what so ever!!!

now i know why!

Thanks. However, if you really want good information get David Vizard's book on tuning American V8s. He's written reams on the subject of glasspacks. I found a copy at my local library; so you should be able to get one without buying it.

By the way, those old Ford V6s have a stunning exhaust note on a straight through system. Do it!

I think ACT do Cherry Bombs and that they have done an S with them before (for 'Wildfire' PH) so it could be worth speaking to them about it.
