The fog light rotary switch is beginning to come loose in the dash. The bible says that these secure by a nut on the front, which can be tightened once the knob is removed. I have tried to remove this, but it shows no sign of moving, and I don't want to use too much force.
Looking at the rear of the switch, it appears that the switches my be secured by a plastic barb behind the dash panel.
Has anybody tried successfully to tighten these up?

Yes - i had exactly the same problem. My early S3 has the same switches. When it when for its last MOT, it failed on this point, fog switch insecure. You are right about the barbs, well two plastic prongs that just need to be pushed in to allow the switch to be removed.

I solved the problem in two ways. Firstly i used a couple of small strips of double side foam tape, the sort that is used to stick number plates on etc, (Halfords sell it). This will be hidden under the switch and helps to stop the switch moving. Then to tighten the switch fully i used two nails to keep the prongs pushed out – crude but effective. Couldn,t see any other way to do it. I think the switches are no longer available so can’t buy a new one.

I found that mine were actually glued in place. dunno if this is how it was originally but now the glue is failing the switches are moving around so I would be interested if you find some way of securely and permanently fixing them back in.

Cheers Mel, I thought I was going mad.
I will try to get the switch out by depressing the prongs at the back, and then see how I can make it a tighter fit. Access to the rear of the dash is very tight, so this will be another exercise in grovelling about on the floor.
