Hi All,

Someone scraped the driver's side of my car the other day. Front panel, door, rear panel, wind mirror. Took her to a bodyshop and a respray is obvsiously needed. It can be done through the thrid party's insurance so no bother to me.

BUT, I want to make sure they do a first class job, I am also getting them to quote me separately for doing the rest of the car whilst it's in there as I get it at a discounted rate.

The bodyshop were asking me if they should try to remove the mouldings on the rear (the rubber bit below the lights). Also they mentioned possibly just masking off the hood. I am concerned that in order to do a proper job, they need to take these items off completely. But they were worried about breaking the moulding and not being able to source a new one - can they be bought from somewhere?

It's booked in for the morning and I am getting a bit nervous...

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Hi David

In an ideal world bothe the moulding (and here I guess you are talking about the rubber bumpers) and the hood should be removed. Bumpers are no problem but are connected by a series of self tappers or bolts to the body throuh a metal strip inside the hollow 'd' section, the problem is that the strip rust like crazy and this is how they will be looking now

So the bodyshow would have to make some new strips.

The hood is a bit more difficult. The rear edge, which is what you would have to remove, is held by 5 bolts whith their head under the canvas and it the devils own job to shift them without the heads turning, can be done though see here under 'rear roof section removal'

If you want a decent job I'd steer well clear of any paintshop that wants to mask off the hood. If the insurance is paying out you want the job done properly.

I have just had my car done at Custom’s and Classics Guilden Morden Herts. They removed everything the backs of the bumpers were so bad I decided to do away with them. Here is a photo of the finished product. The car was originally white as well. As you can see we took the bonnet off for painting. Any questions email me at alan@oneservice.co.uk Hope I have uploaded pictures ok.

can those bumpers still be bought?

When I dropped the car off, I tried to explain the roof and bumper removal procedure of the S. They assured me, pointing at a kite mark on their logo, that all their work was carried out using a "Method of Repair" which is apparently sourced from the manufacturer!! Does anyone believe this? I very much doubt there will be some secret stash of detailed instructions for how to disassemble a TVR that someone on this forum does not already know about...

It remains to be seen what sort of a horlicks they are going to make of it. I am going in on Wed to see the car once it has been readied so I can see what they have done before it's respray.

I am always a bit cynical of insurance based repairers - I know there are good ones but my experience tells me that they do as little as possible while claiming as much as possible from the insurance company.
Be very picky.

If you're not 100% happy when you get it back, refuse to sign the paperwork and suggest they resolve your concerns. Unless you're happy they won't get any money from the insurance company.

Yes that's what I will do.

GUESS WHAT? They just called me to ask me how to open the bonnet!!! Surely that should be covered in their "Method of Repair"???
