Which UJ for bottom of rack?
Discussion
I wanted to change my steering uj's and bought replacements listed in the previous thread: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
The uj's have arrived and the top one is fine and fitted ok. The bottom one does not look anything like the original.
Instead of:

I have had delivered:

Any ideas what the correct one to order is?
Cheers.

The S4 has a V8S chassis = V8S bottom UJ not the usual V6 one!
For future reference you also have a V8S steering rack not a standard S1/2/3 rack.
Thanks,For future reference you also have a V8S steering rack not a standard S1/2/3 rack.
In that case I have two questions:
1) What is the part number or place to buy the V8 type?
2) Anyone want to buy a V6 type

Sorry I think you might have to batter your wallet a bit

Remember you need to add carriage and VAT

Thats outrageous! Also I am reluctant to even contact TVRcarparts.com because they never seem to have the parts they list on the website.http://www.tvrcarparts.com/pages/partdetail.asp?id...

Is that uj exclusive to the S or is it from another vehicle?
I know they have these in stock - I've seen them when I stopped there and sod them some brand new wedge ones I bought off fleabay when listed as for the S1-3. Got my money back when traded against Polybushes.
I would like to add I have also found TVR Carparts often don't have in stock what is on their website, but a quick bell always works and they'll try to get the parts for you if they don't have them. There range is also much larger than the website - I think there website is a bit of an after thought to their business really. I drive past them twice every week so normally stop off to speak face to face if I need a part and have always found them really helpful to the extent that the mechanics will even talk you through some of the more difficult and awkward looking jobs.

I do think they are friendly on the phone too and dont want to get into anything heavy about this.I would like to add I have also found TVR Carparts often don't have in stock what is on their website, but a quick bell always works and they'll try to get the parts for you if they don't have them. That said, the last time I ordered from them I wanted rail sockets, rail lugs, and roof catches. All these were listed on the website. The reply was that they did not even have a supplier for the lugs or the sockets, and the catches would be in soon. That was 3 weeks ago and I had called to try to order the catches from them 2 weeks previous to that - I had been told they would have them in two weeks.
To be fair I have to say that I have found the same with other TVR websites so far. As with all the TVR websites which dont have the items in stock (or with a supplier) they do not remove the items from the list once aware of the situation. Why not?
I set up, ran and then sold toolsandhardware.com - I had 11,000 products on the website and I never just listed items I thought people would want and then try and source them AFTER the order.
What I find frustrating is that I have never had this situation before. I have used the internet for ordering parts as an engineer for years.
Back on track an alternative arrangement might be to get a slightly longer steering shaft and use the UJ you have bought - I know Rally Design do sell a couple of steering shafts but whether either of them would be suitable I don't know.
You need a 13mm spline both ends.
Edited to add I've just looked and they only do one shaft, so what's the chances?

Edited to add - it could be well worth getting the old UJ off and taking to to your local motor factors to see if they can identify it from any catalogues they have.
This looks similar but I'm not quite sure its the same - but I think this tells us that it must be out there somewhere as a good price. I'm not sure that there's splines on these so they could be completely wrong.

Thanks for the info and taking the time to look up the ebay ones. I think they are too short though.
Being TVR I assume they are standard for some car, does anyone know which car? I dont mind paying reasonable money but the £50 mark is way off for one uj I think.
Thanks, Steve.
As I say any decent motor factor will whip out a catalogue and figure it out in 5 minutes.Being TVR I assume they are standard for some car, does anyone know which car? I dont mind paying reasonable money but the £50 mark is way off for one uj I think.
Thanks, Steve.
The early Range Rover's had a similar set of UJs in their rack - the wedge one I got from ebay by mistake was from one (identical except for the larger diameter splined hole on one end), so there may be a source via landrover as for many other parts such as fuel sealing rings etc.

If Rimmer Brothers need to see the UJ I have a V8S/S4 one on my old rack in the garage - they are about half an hour from me so I could go over there if you twist my arm.
I'm not so sure if they come up with anything it will be any cheaper than TVRCarparts though.
Much appreciated, thanks.I'm not so sure if they come up with anything it will be any cheaper than TVRCarparts though.
I have had a response from them to say they are quite sure its not a Land Rover part. There is a motor factors 20 mins away and I think I will give them a try. Price has now been taken over by curiosity and my stubborn streak

Rimmer Bros aren't necessarily the cheapest but as you've found you can't knock their service.
I dont mind paying for service.I have been to the local motor factors, they know there stuff but could not find that uj in the books. The Fiesta one you mentioned from Ebay is the closest but not right.
I will need to keep looking....
