Insurance Question
Discussion
Hi people, any help on this one...
I've just added my wife to my S3 insurance policy and been royally screwed.
Tesco agreed on a price and then when we received the documents, they were incorrect. On calling to correct them they now demand an extra £300 even though nothing has changed from when they quoted. They refuse to budge and so I've gone elsewhere
I've been paying since June for me only, on a monthly scheme and it also appears I've not actually been insured from day one - they now tell me they have never received details of my immobiliser so therefore no cover for theft! - never mentioned it to me before.
Anyway, I've just tried another few places on-line and they come in MUCH cheaper - £450 (Admiral) as opposed to £820 for Tesco, or £470 with no-claims protection as opposed to Tesco's £920!
So, I'm thinking of cancelling Tesco and going with another. I believe the penalty for early cancellation is pro-rata plus 1 month - but cannot figure out what this means in reality!???
I've been insured (on paper anyway) since 21/6/03 and was quoted £679.22 inc. the monthly percentage charge. I've paid £403.67 so far by my bank statements.
They keep throwing figures at me until I'm completely confused. Can anyone explain roughly what I should get back, and opinions on if you think it is worth it, or should I wait until the renewal in June? If I cancel should I wait until 20/12/03 to get full benefit from the month?
Help please. Too stressed!

That is typical for them....
Unless you have proof (and I dont mean your wife listening in on the conversation), unfortunately, you can only go by what you have in writing, as it seems that you are so far down the line with them that they will not move on anything (not that they would usually). If you want to get out of a contract, the burden of proof is usually on you.
Pro rata means roughly "per parts received", i.e. take the annual cover price, or the monthly one, whichever is the higher, divide it by the number of months you were covered, that is the pro rata sum.
Have a look however what your policy says for changes of cover. There should be a provision for the case that the cover is changed. Usually that is seen as a new contract offer with the possibility to get out if they dont come up with a decent quote. Dont listen to what they say, have a look at what they write and dont be intimidated by there bully behaviour.
If you want your peace of mind, then forget the whole thing, stay with them until renewal, as it is a real uphill struggle to take on insurances in this country. Believe me, been there.
If you really are fed up, go for it, mate.

If you really want to change, the only thing you can do is ask to speak to one of the managers at the Tesco insurance call centre!!! In my experience the only people that can help out here are managers and supervisors. If you explain that you feel you were not explained everything properly then demand to be able to leave the scheme, especially as they are now demanding an extra £300! Also ask to listen to the recording of your conversation as they record conversations most of the time and I am sure if they have it then they have to let you listen to it! mention Trading Standards and Watchdog this always gets immediate attention!!!
Thanks for all your suggestions guys. I'll call them again and see what I can do.
I've cancelled the new policy for my wife's car and gone elsewhere for that.
My policy is still with them, and I'll probably leave it there until it expires just to be easy. I've discovered my blood pressure just cannot cope with dealing with these people
WildfireS3 - I've been insured with Tesco since June and only now, when I added my Wife, did I get a new letter stating "It is a requirment of your cover that your car has a Tesco Insurance approved immobilisation security device and that proof of installation is received and accepted by us. We haven't yet received this proof and I must remind you that you are not covered for theft or attempted theft until we do". Nice of them to let me know, sent proof off in June. I'll send another copy...
Thanks all, knew I'd be able to get valuable advice here

I use www.FootmanJames.co.uk £315 pa car parked on road, no proof of immobilkiser alarm needed, this is for a limited policy but they do unlimited for about £100 extra.
Specialist Classic Insurance brokers who know what they are talking about.
If you wish to transfer from Tesco, they may be able to sort it out for you.

Update:
I'm now with Admiral
£460 Fully comp with my wife listed and no-claims protection. (Tesco would have come to just over £1000 for this lot)
Tesco just wouldn't budge re. refunds. Infact, they just kept ignoring me.
To find out I've not been insured for theft (expectially in light of a recent event) and the unhelpfullness of Tesco made my decision for me.
