Hi everybody!
Anybody know anything about the Ford Explorer 4.0 V6 based on the Cologne engine?? The XR4x4 guys are dropping them into their cars in place of the 2.9...210 bhp with all the American smog bits - sounds good for 230+ with it all removed...any comments??

Check with 'LeeBee', I think this was one of the things he was looking into.

Have a look at www.ford-trucks.com it was covered a few times.

IMHO for the chassis etc it shouldnt be a problem if you keep it under 250 bhp.

Would be nice, but a little costly to do. You would need all the bits with it, ECU, intake stuff etc and you may need to have a bespoke exhaust manufactured too.

V6S chassis should be ok, but it would be on the limit and if the chassis isn't new then that limit may have come down a bit. You may also find that the running gear would be on it's limit too, so probably recon gear box, new uprated diff and clutch, better brakes and suspension would be in order.

Plus insurance and running costs.

V8S's aren't quite so expensive after all!

The news article on the home page about SVE engines mentions....

"Owners of classic cars powered by Ford's venerable 'Cologne' V6 will welcome a chance to look over a short-block Ultimax in 3.4 litre format."

Might be worth further investigation!

Well there is the OHV 4.0ltr engine and the OHC 4.0ltr engine from the Ford Explorer. I've just fitted an OHV engine in my S2.
There are a lot of details to work. All that considered, I'm really happy with the end result..... so far!

It currently feels like a V8S, massive great lumps of torque and very low down the rev range.

I'll get some pics prepared and post them later.

Wey hey, what sort of figures is old lump chucking out then , was it a straight swap or was there afair bit of engineering to facilitate it.
Like to see some pictures please .

I've quickly created a web page with a few words and pics on it. I'll add more detail when I get more time.

http://hometown.aol.co.uk/petermturnbull/myhomepage/auto.html

I will certainly try to get to VW in Feb.

The outstanding punchlist 'to-do' is:-
- connect rev counter.
- fix oil leak on sump (front seal).
- fix water pump/alternator tensioning pulley.
- fit the rear diff, V8S trailing arms and rear discs.
- Oh, and fit the Nitrons! Delivery due soon.
- DRIVE IT MORE!

My future 'long term' plans are to sort out the breathing. Re-work the heads and probably a different exhaust. After saying that, I've some thoughts towards fitting throttle bodies, one for each inlet!

Well as you may have seen Peter my old gal has gone to a good home. But I must say your engine looks great.

The web page is also very nice, I wish I could have done this when I was working on mine.

I'll be in touch, perhaps pop over this weekend if you are in!

Well the Griff is almost finished, only a few small things to complete. Thanks to all of you who came and saw it at the MPH show last week.Don't think I could have imagined so much interest and nice comments would be forthcoming.Must have chatted to at least 100 TVR folk, great fun.

Work on the S has now started, took the bonnet off this morning in -3 degrees.Have sold it to a chap which is good news for me as it's a big item to have kicking around.I will keep a running log with my camera of the complete project and will post some pickies as it progress's.First thing is to get it in the workshop and strip it down to the bare chassis.Aiming to have it finished for about June/july.Must be done for Oct 9 as I want to use it for a get away car as I am supposed to get married.Must be mad!!

Mike; Now I've got this engine running, I can't wait for your plans for the Cossie heads on the 4.0ltr OHC block to be completed.

Patrick; Sunday (before lunch) would be best this week-end. Give me a call or drop me an EMail first.

Well hopefully you won't have to wait too long.Man is coming to collect bonnet tomorrow (sad really)and then the S will go into the workshop and be taken to bits. Was looking at some colours yesterday.Favourite is Le Mans Pearlesent Green with Standox Prismatic lacquer over the top.Result is the base colour not only has its own pearly effect but has additional light reflections from the standox product. One small draw back £480 per litre for the lacquer and thats trade. However the green is almost a perfect match with the "Cosworth" badges.Does anyone know if the cossy badge found on the earlier 2.9 plenum is available. The downside of what I have is there is nothing on the rockers or plenum that denotes what it is, except for the rather naff plastic cover plate (which I'm not using anyway)Right I'll stop rambling on now and go and jump in a warm bath. It's too cold to be fiddling with cars.I know, big woose.
