K&N filter set up S2 1990 Yes? No?
Discussion
Hi To my S2 connections. The air intake Filter on my 1990 2.9 S2 (gave all that info incase needed) is dirty looking and I would like to replace it with a K&N filter. I have noticed that it has a tube leading into the middle of the foam filter, I'm assuming that a K&N wouldn't have this and I haven't had a really good look at it yet to see what this hose dose. My car is put away for the winter and I can't get at it right now. Has anybody made this change over? Can I get pictures from anybody? How is it done? Where can I get one if I can at all?

Hi Dave,
Happy New Year .
I assume the present filter you have fitted is a Pipercross one?
At my last service I did enquire about changing to K & N but was told that the mounting plates and a few other things would be needed to change over and from an efficiency point of view there would be no benefit so I didn't bother. The pipe you mention going into the filter is the oil breather pipe from the rocker covers, if you did go to K&N you would have to allow for this.
I think there are a few earlier threads on this subject.
Cheers.

If you fit a replacement Piper cross filter (original), this also doesn’t have the hole for the breather pipe from the rocker cover. You have to cut it yourself and change over the pipe fittings.
You can avoid cutting this hole, while also discarding the ugly breather pipe, by fitting a K&N rocker cover breather filter like i did. This pushes on the oil filler cap, where the breather pipe fits. I have a photo of it somewhere, if you want to see it.
Hope these picies give you some idea of the filter.
I bought it about February last year, mail order from Demon Tweeks. It works great, no leaking oil.
The codes on the box were as follows, product code: K/N62-1330 Description: Breather (CR-01301) 03E05
I think the First set of letters/numbers is the K&N part number.
Edited to say, Demon Tweeks does international sales

Here are a couple of pictures of the K&N 57i kit I fitted to my S2 a few years ago now
Each airflow meter has it's own filter and requires a complete new bracket assembly to be made for the airflow meters (the airflow meters need to be spaced apart as the filters have quite a large diameter at the back end). This is actually quite involved as clearance is required for the electrical connections to the meters.
The other downside is that they are very expensive (I seem to remember mine were about £120+ for the kit) and a lot of that expense is a bracket (for the Ford) that is useless.
Another way of looking at it is that TVR use (or used) Pipercross filters on 450bhp Tuscan race cars so they must be pretty good, the replacement S filter is about £40 from a dealer...............

Well from Air filters to battery straps. Works for me. Watch when you are using Velcro straps. Velcro and most car fluids will not get along very well. Most Petrol based products will start a slow and sometimes not so slow decay of the Velcro. Just keep an eye on it. I use it a lot in business and learned the hard way.

Thanks Spivvy. That is want I was looking for. That looks like it would be an easier fit than the K&N but is it as good a filter? The front one I mean I assume that is the Piper. How much are they and has anybody got a web site to buy on from? I also assume that they are washable?
got mine from demon tweeks it is a kk300/100 element product code P/CC3004
it cost £27.04 +VAT + £3.49 delivery
it is a straight replacement and fits straight on and is washable ,
i am not sure about the rocker cover breather it's a K&N part i think ?
i will try and dig out the box as i got it from a local motor factors it was quite expensive around £20.00 or more can't remember Hope that helps
To answer your question re whether or not the Pipercross filter is as good as a K&N, I was told by a shop that I had gone into to buy some K&N filters from that the Pipercross ones were as free flowing as you could get so therefore must be at least equally as good as the K&N filters.
