Dunno about the outboard, but you could knock up a periscope using a couple of mirrors and a bit of drain pipe.

You're not too far away in Bristol... the weather here (Chippenham) was shite too this morning, but looking out the window I'm starting to smile..... its blue sky currently... hope it stays like that as I'm driving to Peninsula this afternoon to see the Sagaris..... roof off if the weather holds

My memory must be failing me then. I can recall often being sat in a dinghy for ages while my Dad tried to start the Seagull... wind cord round flywheel, PULL, swear under breath, wind cord round flywheel etc. etc.

we had one as a backup motor on our boat, it did take a bit of starting, but it would run forever..

Oh yeah, once it was running it was fine! I think it was probably the outboard engine equivalent of a mule... a bugger to get started, but very dependable once on the move.

Indeed. The real seagulls certainly moved quicker than the outboard ones.

(I have to admit, I never thought I'd find myself getting nostalgic about a small quirky outboard motor! )
