Good Evening all

Just a note to let you know I've just gone and bought a Cosworth 24V BOA engine.. its sitting in the garage right now.. complete except loom (well part of its there) and Alternator.

I'm now going to start gathering parts for the conversion MT75 (2WD) box and perhaps a LSD at the same time.. does anyone have experience of using the Granada Cosworth unit..? Good Bad.. I thought this may be a good stopgap until I can afford a Quaife.. also need a flywheel and starter. and some BOB cams. smile

Anyway I will be storing this engine in my garage for maybe 4 or 6 months.. is there anything I should do.. turn it over how ofton..? put oil in the bores etc..? Any advice appreciated.

Lastly does anyone know if the Torque converter just pulls off the crank or am I missing some bolts..?

Cheers

Damain

Torque convertors I've seen in the past are bolted onto the drive plate (that replaces the flywheel) from the engine side if that makes sense.
You may have to rotate it to get access to the bolts either at the bottom of the engine or through the starter aperture or something. Once thats off you can remove the drive plate and fit a flywheel.
Mike (BoostedLS1) would be a good man to ask - he's done a few Cossie conversions.

Why are you thinking MT75 gearbox? - I think its a myth that it was ever fitted to the S - the existing gearbox will fit though it may be marginal in terms of strength if you get some serious bhp going.

Is it the one with the solid plenum or the later one with the plastic cover?

I did like this engine but it always looked very wide to me. It used the same block as the TC OHV engine which is why the hole is there in the V for the central cam shaft, but with the twin cam heads. This made the engine twice as wide as the OHV version, IIRC it was pretty much wider than it was long.

I've never heard it called the BOA though, it always used to be FBA for the solid plenum and FBC for the later one.

As for storing it for 4 to 6 months, I would just oil everything in sight to keep the atmospheric blooming at bay.

BOA is the cosworth version of this engine and that has the cast plenum with cosworth badges. BOB is the subsequent ford version which uses their own variable intake manifold. It's ugly hence the plastic cover smile Oh, no cosworth badges on the BOB engine.

Good move, you will not be dissappointed, and it may be a bit more simple than you think.

I changed my 2.8i S1 to the above engine, used the original gearbox and flywheel, and fitted an LSD from a 4x4 Sierra. So far (3 years and plenty of track days its still all fine, although the gearlinkage pivot bush needs replacing, and the gearbox mounts are shot. Oh yes, and the original diff mounts were shot, so I made up a solid carrier and bolted that to the chassis via some rubber pads. All the judder and horrid noises have gone, although there is a bit of diff whine at about 40mph. I might change the gearbox to a BGH uprated item which also has a taller 1st gear, but its not desperate.
Going back to the flywheel, the standard 2.8 flywheel is seen as an improvement if you want more responsiveness. I am not sure if the 2.9 engine flywheel is the same. My car also had an uprated clutch fitted...allegedly..although there was a reciept to prove it, which has also been fine. If I were starting from scratch again, I might be tempted to fit a T5 gearbox, which has plenty of scope for further power increases, and the BOB cams....but then I can still fit the BOB cams.
The BOA engine is easier to fit, but I cannot remember why exactly.

The BOA is preferred because it's ecu is easier to use as opposed to the BOB which has anti-theft software installed, PATS. The BOB also has VIS on the inlet which is unpopular and it lacks the kudos of the cosworth badges on that rather nice looking BOA plenum.

Have you seen the nice (but not cheap) polyurethane diff mount on Ebay . . . 3702300502002 scratchchin

Thanks Norman, too many 0's should be 370 230 502 002. . . . getmecoat

The diff mounting was obviously recognised as a weak point by TVR as its significantly beefed up on the V8S & a different arrangement to the V6.

Edited to make the pic work rolleyes

I'm watching with interest! This is a mod I'll be doing to my S2....only I want to bolt a couple of dirty turbos to it. ;-)

do you know if the standard Granny exhaust manifolds can be used? - maybe swapped over to exit forwards? - will they clear the chassis?

I doubt it but worth a try.

Mine have been hacked anyway so are useless.. I read on one of the Ford forums that tuned length and same lengh primaries are worth a good perfomance increase on these engines so may look into some custom headers if funds allow.

Nice.... what level of power are you aiming for.. I only mention this as its been stated before on here (not by me and I don't know either way) that above 300Bhp the trailing arm mounts start suffer and eventually fail.. especially if they look like mine did prior to my chassis restoration.. not sure if this is true or urban myth bit some streanthing could be in order.

It's a very long way off. I'm only 20 now, and the project is going to take some serious money to get it going. However, the plan is to make it the fastest S there is. Sure, I could buy a Chim for cheaper and go just as fast, but I think an S with 400-500bhp might be more amusing. There'll have to be a lot of chassis strengthening, suspension tweaks, and some serious new brakes, but I reckon it'd be something unique....and FAST.

Interesting.. you could go Cosworth YB and make a replica of the famous TVR S Cosworth.. it should even be eligible for the TVR race series too.. which unfortunately the 24V would not. I only mention this as it looks like you appreciate the chassis mods that would be needed.. it may be worth looking at a Chimera chassis or tubular space frame mated to S body.. that said a 500Bhp YB will probably set you back best part of £8K once all the parts needed to make it run are added. It should blow the V8's into the weeds though if you could make it handle properly.

When I owned TVR653X I felt like it was already the fastest S. That's probably cos it was my first TVR though and nothing like any car I'd owned before wink
