Hi
We have got a niggling problem with our S1 which suddenly loses power.

We thought it was the fuel pump so we had a new pump fitted and the fuel pressure checked - all ok

The car is running fine otherwise - it got us to Gloucester (from Cardiff) yesterday but on the way back it lost power again and won't run properly. We pulled over, turned ignition off, then back on without turning it over. The fuel pump then comes on, pump then picks up a minutes or so after, then the car starts and runs fine.

Any wisdom gratefully received!

I have a similar problem at present (rough running when cruising and the engine is warm). I have limited mechanical knowledge but my checklist of tasks is;

1) Clean rotor arm and distrubuter cap (Distrubuter cap looked dodgey so replaced it).
2) Pulled spark plugs and checked for signs of soot/glazing (if my spark plugs were older I would have replaced them).
3) Replace HT leads
4) Coil looked dodgey so replaced it.
5) On the S2 there is a yellow block connector under the dash - I will be checking the electrical connacts here if the problem is not resolved. There is also a black multiblock connector above number 1 cylinder which I shall be checking/replacing if neccessary (S1 probably does n't have this).
6) Replace fuel filter.

If these don't work I'II probably take it to a specialist to have the fault codes read.

Ralph.

rust in the fuel line from tank to pump, there's no filter on the s1 apart from a thimble filter on the fuel pick up in the tank. However you do state the pump was changed, was there any debris in the pump? If there is fuel pressure when you have this problem then the above is unlikely to be the cause.
Faulty fuel pump relay, you can swap with another relay to check it from recollection.
From your post it suggests the fuel pump dosen't run for a while on the restart, I'd go yellow connector, relay, fuel pump, debris.

I had a misfire problem on my S1 which meant it was seriously down on power, i found the fault to be a corroded multi plug connector. It was a small black one with four wires in it located near the coil on the L/H side of the engine bay.

Hope this helps, Graham

Ralph,

I have a fault code reader you can borrow if necessary, although I'm now in Bristol not Swindon, but drive passed regularly on my way to Portsmouth so could drop it off if you require - just PM me

The S1 has just a mechanical fuel injection system. There is no ECU used and nothing to read fault codes from.

Here is the diagnostic fault table for the Bosch injection system.
Generally before changing the fuel pump I would go for the fuel pump relay.

Interesting. I'm having similar problems, not quite the same. Mine just switches off and refuses to start even though it has power, fuel etc...

See my thread about looking for an ignition amplifier after an auto electrician had a fiddle. These things apparently corrode badly from the inside and will throw up the symptoms we have.

Saying that, I have no poor running etc... it's all or nothing with mine. Plus, I've had an engine rebuild, new coil, fuel pump, HT leads etc...
