Starter Motor problem?

Recently I have had a problem occasionally starting my S2. W hen I try and turn her over there is a click and nothing more. I will try it a few more times and eventually it fires. I am thinking the starter motor/solonoid could be on its way out. Does anyone know if the starter motor is a straight excahnge for a Ford Cologne engine or something different? Thanks.
I had EXACTLY this problem 2 days after I bought the car.
Next time it does it get a wooden or insulated metal pole (I used a roof bar with rubber ends) stick it between the exhaust manifold pipes down (I think between cylinders 5&6 on the passenger side) onto the starter solenoid then smack it hard. Bare metal is dangerous due to the direct battery connection on the back of the motor.
I did this most times I started the car for a while then got bored so I dismantled my starter solenoid, cleaned it and greased it and it has been fine ever since.
ETA: Having read your post properly thought I would add that I actually took mine apart twice. First time the motor then the solenoid, which finally fixed it. It's not difficult to do so it would be worth cleaning it up and greasing it and seeing if that fixes it. Otherwise you might need a new one or a professional rebuild.

Obvious things first - check cable from battery is well tightned onto starter motor(disconnect battery first). You might also want to have a look at the spade connector on the starter motor itself, the wire that feeds off to the dreaded yellow connector, give it a good clean up or replace it, had some poor running problems normally associated with the yellow connector, changed/swopped throttlepot, idle valve,coil etc(thanks to Graham -Harry1972m's spares dept) then starter motor started playing up, sounds daft but ended up being that spade connector.
