How do I get the drums back on???

Hi all,

I had a problem with one of the rear brakes binding so popped the drum off. The culprit seemed to be a leaking (and sticking) wheel cylinder so this was replaced and the flexi-hoses replaced with braided hoses. Both sides have been fixed even through only one was binding.

The problem is that now I can't get the drums back on. I can confirm that the handbrake is off. Even on the side which was previously 'good' the shoes seem to protrude out approximately 2mm too far. I have tried giving the drum a few wacks with a rubber mallet but I'm starting to fear for the safety of the friction material on the shoes if I continue with this approach.

Should I be slackening off the automatic adjustment racket mechanism before attempting to refit the drums?

Yes, slacken off the adjuster and centralise the shoes. Once the drums back on a few pumps of the pedal and pulls of the handbrake will readjust it all.

Thanks. Do I need to take the shoes off to adjust the mechanism or should I be able to turn it by hand / using pliers or other suitable tool?
