After removing the inlet manifold it is now obvious that the inlet manifold gasket was not the problem after all (although it is very tatty). So it looks like the head gasket after all (fingers crossed that it is, and not something even worse).

Bad luck Roy - I was having head gasket nightmares last week after my overheating incident - not a fun experience.

Hope it all works out alright...

Just been reading through some old posts after doing a search on head gaskets. I have found reference to changing the head bolts, is this a must do?

Roy,

If there Torx type bolts then you have to replace them.

Got mine through my local ford garage...

Roy, Having done my heads in the summer I found Burtons to be the cheapest for a head set of gaskets and they can supply the head bolts as well. Gaskets bolts and postage came to around £110.If you need more info like part numbers let me know.

Fortunately I already have replacement head gaskets and inlet manifold gasket as I got these in a kit when I replaced various gaskets last winter. Thanks for the info re changing the head bolts. I`ll get some ordered first thing Monday.
