Hey guys
I'm rather warming to the S shape. Please excuse me asking these questions, I'm pretty busy so haven't had chance to go through the other threads. Will do once ive got these damn essays done in a week or so
Anyways, basically I'm at university in London and currently own a Peugeot 306. I leave this at home in Bucks and Mum uses it occasionally for shopping and as its cheaper to run than her main car.
As i can pick up a good S for not a lot more than the 306, i was wondering if it would be feasible to run at 20...
Has anyone insured an S at this young age?
Are they similar to most TVRs in that they run better the more they're used?
I'm sure Mum wouldn't mind driving it from time to time, and I'd prefer to have a fun car back home, rather than the Pug. (also means i can blag lifts out to clubs instead of being the designated driver
)
Rough servicing/running costs over a year?
Thanks all and see you at Virginia Waters.
Rico
edit: couple of other things:
1) I'm 6ft2 and 15 stone. comfortable for the more sizable driver?
2) Any price guides available online and what to look for?
3) I'd be buying around October, would it be best to wait until the winter time when prices will be lower?

Batty s4c Bought Teds car at age 19
Insurance WILL be your biggest hurdle all TVR are group 20
Yes the more they are run the btter they are
6k service at Austec (crawley) is £250 plus vat
Buy the "bible" by Steve Heath "Shpub" before you start "S" ownership
Check insurance first though, as if you can afford/prepared to pay this cost everything else is fairly reasonable

your fit

price guides are very difficult as condition means everything not is it an S1,S2 S3 etc.Buying guide, well the bible has one, i've put one up (constantly being updated)
3) I'd be buying around October, would it be best to wait until the winter time when prices will be lower?
If you will use it regullary then fine but if not wait till nearer spring, car might be a bit dearer but you save on six months tax and insurance and possibly a service. Not forgetting you will get used to the car in decent weather

Are they a good introduction to rear-wheel drive? Or will i be terrified coming from a front-wheel drive hatch?
This will be my only car, but im away at university for most of the year, so it will be a second car for my Mum also.
Ooh getting quite excited and its months away!

Having Just entered TVR ownership Myself (S2) I have just answered most of your questions for myself.
Size, well I'm 6'1" and not Mr Bean, and I've got loads of room. More than the day to day Rover 216.
Insurance, the deciding factor for me. If you are going to use it on a day to day basis the insurance will be a little more, but if you can live with limited milage then a classic policy will be cheaper.
I'm only 26 and got insured for £300 with Royal Sunalliance, they were one of the few company's who would map my other cars no claims bonus to the second car.
As for Price, Just weekly look at all the web sites with S's on sale, you will soon sus what you can get for your money, Then when you have decided on Model, rough colour, spec ect then just wait, but once a car that meets all your requirements comes up of sale move quick as there will be someone else looking for the same. Happy hunting

Hi Rico
So you're 20 and looking for an S? Have you got any NCB?? I have 5/6 years and pay well over £1500 for insurance. But I am parked on the street in the middle of Newcastle. I'm 23 soon btw, and have two policies, both with full (5yrs) NCB.
Bear in mind that you will have to pay that each year and that there are other running costs.
So far I have gone in for around £1000 worth of repairs/parts since September.
Not that I'm trying to put you off, just bear this in mind.
Unless you can get insured on your father/mother's policy, insurance WILL be high.

Wildfire. I'll be 21 when i get it and have about 3 years no claims. It will be an only car, garaged in a small village in Bucks, so a lot lower risk area. Limited milage too sadly as I'm away for about half the year at uni.
My mum would be on the insurance to keep it ticking over whilst im away, but It would be under my name for NCB reasons.
I haven't looked into insurance yet so am preparing myself for a shock!
There are people on PH with Elises etc at my age so its obviously doable.
Wish me luck

I got my S1 when I was 24 and insurance was a real headache. I couldn't find a classic insurance policy that would cover me until I was 25 and therefore ended up on a standard policy which cost me £1450 (limited to 5000 miles and with 3 yrs NCD). When I did turn 25 I got classic cover for £400, a bit of a difference!

Just remember the rear is always going to try and overtake the front of the car which is fine as long as you don't let it actually happen (I wheel-span spectacularly around a wet miniroundabout in Colchester within days of getting mine oops... no harm done though except I could stop laughing). Having said that the power comes on smoothly so they are nice and controllable.
Hey rico.
Yeah, I wanted an Elise but decided I couldn't afford the initial outlay for the car. The Elise insurance is cheaper, the insurance group is 16/17 where as the Tiv is always 20.
But if it's on limited milage and garaged you may be in luck. If I garage it at my parents house the insurance is almost £500 cheaper.
But like someone above said getting insurance at a young age is a major headache. I can't get any classic/future classice policies until I am 25 and I use it as everyday travel.
The majority of insurance companies refuse to insure me.

Rico, I'm your height, and, ahem, a few pies heavier. I tried to get in/out of new Elise at Castle's a few weeks back.
The sill is so wide, and roof so low, that with roof on, it will stay in the garage - they are f
g impossible.
If you are into humiliating yourself in public, go ahead and buy one - entry/exit the car will end up on Beadle or similar outtake show guaranteed.
Get an S, lovely and comfy...... but get S3 onwards for bigger doors to aid 6'2" frame in and out!!

Just tried a certain well-known online insurance and it came to £1800, but im sure if i shopped around i could get it a lot cheaper.
So not insane but still not good
Rico try Unicover Insurance services, ask for Richard they are a specialist broker and can sometimes offer great deals. If they cant help you they normally know who can and will point you in the right direction, I know them well. Tel 01903877177.
Good luck you wont regret buying an S
Mike
I had 0 no claims and no TVr experience. My best quote was 1400 until I tried elephant.co.uk. 600 lids. Unbelievable. Plus free breakdown - very useful.
Phoned back three times to check.
We're the same size - the car is designed for us. As long as you take out the cigarette lighter, and don't mind getting out every now and then to close the boot. Who's bright idea was it to put them there?
