No sump gasket on V8S?

I've just remounted my egine in the V8S. I noticed that the rod that is underneath the sump is quite close to it. I think the gap is 3 mm , which seems not to be enough to me. When i disassembled the engine I noticed that there was no sump gasket fitted, only 'liquid' gasket stuff. Because the sump gasket of a RV8 is quite thick I am beginning to wonder if the V8S should not have a sump gasket. Am I right?

Pretty certain mine has cork sump gasket fitted. What is this 'rod' . Do you mean the anti-roll-bar (ARB) , if so, from memory mine is close but ceratinly greater than 3mm though . Are you sure its not somenthing like the engine mounts are drooping. I'll have a look underneath mine tonight when I get home if required.

On mine the sump is almost touching the anti-roll bar, it has a sump gasket, not had any problems with it so far.

, just got in from the garage and there must be at least 5mm between the sump and the ARB. Bloody tight or what

Likewise on mine too - tight !! Definately have a cork gasket too!

You should have a sump gasket fitted.

Topcats told me the problem with the paste type gasket sealer is that it can melt when v hot and run into the sump itself. It can then be sucked up and b*gger up the oil pump/take up pipe.

Most of the good engine builders use silicone sealent. The 520 has has silicone on the sump and valley with no problems for years. The sump gasket is about as effective as a sieve. Silicone is heat resistent and if carefully used - no large blobs in the sump pan please - is safe.

Obviously I ment the anti roll bar. I had a look again this evening and the gap is 5 mm. So I feel comfortable again and leave it like it is! In a few weeks I'm going start it for the first time since the overhaul. Sometimes at night I see all the nuts and bolts I had in my hands in front of me...
