Oil Filter /Oil Questions

Hi, hope everyone is enjoying the Xmas break.

Few questions from the relative newbie.

1) I have being gathering some parts to service my S3. The oil filter currently fitted is a Champion C130 its a good fit as its short and I want to buy another or an equivalemt, tried Halfords they don't have one, also been on ebay with no joy. I have not been to Motor Factors yet but can anyone suggest where I can get one or what it was originally fitted to.

2) Been looking at engine oil 15W/50 is the correct grade according to the bible, do you all use this in your cars if so which brand do you all use?

Also what gear oil should I use as looking to change this also.

I bought semi synth oil 15W50 from Valvoline.

I used the second one last time (I was using a Bosch one up until then but they've been discontinued apparently).

15w50 seems to be the right gear oil (I use a full synthetic after getting very bad tappet rattle with a semi-synth). Transmission oil is listed as 75w90.

Thanks did check the parts list. But wondered if these that are recommended are all shorter as required and therefore easier to fit, think I just need to know whats tried and tested, if these all fit then I should have no problem. Will see what local motor factors have and take it from there. TA

The last oil filter I used was from Halfords and was part num HOF241. It is a large diameter filter but shallow enough to easily fit.

Well as I say I've used the FRAM one and its fine. I've also seen the Crossland fitted, so that's ok as well.

my local unipart quoted a fully synthetic 5w/30 oil which i have bought for my next engine oil change, what problems are likely in using this spec ???

The main problem is likely to be that it pishes out everywhere.

I use this grade (for three years now - as recommended by partco) and also the unipart filter. The oil pressure sits lower than the "bible" says when warm and at idle (25psi) but it gives good lubrication all round as is evidenced by the coverage in the rocker covers. The oil pressure sits at normal pressure when at revs and temperature (50psi+) and sits at 40psi ish when at idle and cold. It does however find the smallest hole to leak through as Andrew says and as such I have to be very careful to ensure I get a good rocker cover seal when replacing that. I also had to take out and re-seal the oil pressure sender using a thread tape as it found its way up that thread too.

Motorquip VFL313 - Beverley motor factors on Mill Lane.

I use Opie oils online for all my oil now but buy when there's a discount which is every couple of months.

Silkolene Pro S 10/50 fully synth
Castrol Syntrax 75/90 for both gearbox and diff

Opie do a service pack 6ltr + filter but it might be worth ringing them to check if is the correct filter.

I would be careful with Castrol Syntrax because it can be aggressive against the yellow metal (synchronizer rings). Avoid oils with EP additives or GL5 rating. Chris at BGH Geartech recommends Comma Sx75W90 GL4 Semi Synthetic for their transmissions

Didn't know that about the Syntrax went with what Guy at Opie reccomended.

It's not a bad oil, maybe not the right one for a Type 9 gearbox in my conjunction. A wrong oil can cause the gearbox wear faster, the problem is that you don't know until it's too late. I trust Chris at BGH (www.bghgeartech.co.uk) that he knows what he recommends
