i did the metal strip on the doors once by:
1. Clean off old finish
2. Spray paint a primer
3. Spray paint a brown base colour (austin allegro)
4. Get a sponge and paint some black and dark brown and dab onto the strip
5. Tidys the strip up nicely and not many people will notice how you have done it

Folia Tec Woodline design film is what your after from Halfloads. It comes in a 50 x 50 cm self adhesive sheet and costs IIRC around £25 - you'll probably find it in the M*x P*wer
section. Being that size you'll only be able to do the switch panel without joins. I'm not sure how it would look on the main dash though (even assuming your not talking about the fully veneered sweeping S1/2 thingy). I butt jointed it on my door trims and it certainly looks OK and will do until I get them done properly after I've had the carpets, roof, re-spray blah blah all done. As far as doing the door trim strips are concerned, you'll need to get the door panels off first (several threads on this if you do a search - bloody fiddly) and remove the trim strips. There are four very small bolts that slid up and down a channel in the back of the strips - you'll see when you get them off - you may have to cut a recess around the foam on the back of the panel to get at them but its no big deal. Mine were ally and I "dremmelled" off the existing peeling covering. I cut strips of the film 2 cm or so wide and covered accordingly - I found if you heat the film with a hair dryer (not too much) it makes it more pliable and easier to work with. I'll be at VW if you want to take a look and you can wait til then

When I bought my S3, the previous owner had the switch panel and the door trims sprayed an exacy match to the body colour BRG..
This is probably the cheapest and most effective way of cleaning up the panel / strip...
To be honest I think they looks pretty good , so I haven't investigated changing back to original...
IMHO....Some of the panels I have seen on car when they have been reconditioned are not an exact match to the veneer on the dash, as sun and weather has faded the colour slightly over time...I will brobably now be told otherwise......:waits:
I will be at VW if you want a look.....
