fuel tank help needed
Discussion
I have just removed my fuel tank so that I can generally give it a good clean and paint, as you can see below there is a lot of crud in there, what is the best way to get rid of all the crap without just pouring water through it ? also how do I remove the plastic strainer thing without breaking it ?

Thanks for your help guys

The plastic strainer should pull off.
If the tank is full of crud I strongly suggest you treat it. Once rust has started it's best to get rid of it or it will only get worse.
I had this problem a while ago and did a write up here:

It's easy enough to do ~ especially now that you have the tank out.

That plastic filter looks clean compared to what mine was like http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
I did the same as Tim in the link he has posted.
Trying to clean the tank isn't that easy, all the big holes are at the same end of the tank , and you cannot see the other end because of the inner plates in the tank. If you use the POR15 treatment make sure you have a large container to catch the excess when you drain it out of the tank.

Great article by the way, when you are sloshing the cleaner stuff around the tank by shaking it etc do you need to take the sender unit out first or are they really tough and wont breakIf the tank is full of crud I strongly suggest you treat it. I did the cleaning and sealing with the sender unit out.
I cut out 3 or 4 round pieces from some spare thick pond liner I had and then used the normal sealing ring to hold them in place.
The fuel filler hole I found hard to seal. I used some more pond liner and a jubilee clip. It didn't seal totally, but was sufficient.

Yes take the sender out.
I used some thick plastic (1/4 " thick from an old plastic barrel) to blank off holes with sealing ring.
Other holes were blocked with a combination of bits of plastic sheet and electrical tape.
I doesn't need to be completely watertight ( unless you are doing it in the living room with your best white carpet!)

t will be rushing towards my fuel pump, it was quite hard to get off in the first place but if I force it on then I will break it. HELPCheers.....Tony..
Photo above? how does one get that view, ie, how does the round cover come off.
Mine has a leak, and is covered with under seal, so can't see it. Does it unscrew, or what, would it be a gasket that's perished, can i make a new gasket out of an old innertube rubber, any help guys, cheers.

Did you get the filter back on ok?
How did the Sand blasting/powder coat go?
Considering this route myself whilst the tank is off.
Going to get the carrier done any way.
To be fair it was a bit of a pain in the arse really, the only way I could get the strainer to stay put was to wire it to the tank which is a bit of a bodge really but should be ok, then I realised that when I initially removed the strainer I left a bit behind that was crucial to it all going back together DOH, the powder coting went fine and it all looks proper now, I will try and get some pics posted later tonight when I get homeHow did the Sand blasting/powder coat go?

Here are some finished pics, the cradle was done in a textured red powder coat and the tank itself ws done in a standard silver (although it is a bit grey really)Considering this route myself whilst the tank is off.

A bit of a pain job but worth doing

That does look good
Took mine to the paint shop yesterday getting the frame powdercoated in black and the tank in silver.
Got the cover off the surge pot and your right about the filter being difficult to remove, was very clean though - good sign.
Good idea with the blanking grommets.
Got some new hose from Adrian Venn.
New straps in stainless made up by the local blacksmith.
Have to wait till next weekend to get it back from the paint shop then back together.
Will post some pics when its done

Watch the hose guys Adrian@ searched for some time to get the correct spec hose for me, its not ordinary fuel hose or hydraulic hose. It needs to be steel braided internally, hard walled and impervious to unleaded fuel. Its a special.Norman
