Black soot from exhaust

Started the car today, as i do every now and then and after about an hour, i revved it up a bit, and noticed big black cloud of soot, that rose up twenty foot, then slowly fell to the ground, like fine black snow, very dry, not oily.

Any ideas, i'm assuming the worst, as the car is nearly ready for the road, and there's always something to put a stop to my fun. Cheers

That usually denotes Rich running, ie too much fuel, was it ticking over for an hour? If you've been doing that regularly without giving it a good run then its been running very rich due to the fuel enrichnment system when cold and its probably nothing to worry about, just a build up and literally like a fall of soot but out the back of the exhaust. Take it for a good run and blow the rest out.

Although slightly different I had exactly this problem when I was running my pulse jet. couldn't get it to sustain for a couple of days but when it did fire, black snow!

At least you know that it is no longer coating something inside your engine. Pulse jet went from black to very shiny inside so I imagine your engine will have too.

Thanks for that, i did'nt mention the black smoke coming from under the drivers side manifold, when i revved it, because i was cold, so shut the bonnet, in hope it will fix itself before next w/end.

I know what a setback a blowing manifold equals, so near yet so far

Oh yeah, another thing is, the petrol in the car is old, the car has'nt been run properly for a number of years.

The car will not start on this old petrol, so i inject fresh (new) petrol in the plenum thingy. that gets it started, then the old petrol takes over.

Would this old petrol, that has evaporated a lot of the flamable stuff, leaving a more oily, thick..... think i know the answer, but just want your ideas.

Anyway, let's hope them little fairies fix the manifold, before i work on the car again.

Yes a damn good thrashing, use up that dodgy old petrol. Fill her up on premium unleaded. Then thrash her again, because you know that you want to really.
