Maybe I've missed a thread somewhere but what does it involve ? Do you just wizz up and down as much as you like for 90 mins or will there be a set quarter mile/timing lights, cars going one at a time, turn around, get on end of queue and go again as often as time permits ? confused

On the same theme, what level of insurance is required. I understand TVRCC are covering 3rd party and we need to cover recovery costs through our own insurers or am I missing something.

I for one know that my insurance specifically doesn't cover

"Liability for loss or damage caused in a place where aircraft land, park or move, including the associated service roads, refueling areas, and ground equipment parking areas"

So i'd have to come to some understanding with them. I was OK to take the risk but obviously need to sort it should I need it for DE/RAF/MOD to be happy.

The format for runway time will be 1/4 mile ish (3000ft runway - so distance to be decided to maximise benefit) runs with circulating around taxiway (this can be quick except for section past air ambulance launch pad) to join back of queue then timed blast down the runway, with as many runs as time permits. I expect this to be plenty as it should be a run should only take 30 seconds or so with the circulation about a minute. There is also a large dispersal area where you will be able to perform any boy racer style stuff you may wish to do i.e. handbrake turns etc. The only restriction really is we cannot race.

With regards to insurance there are three aspects to this:

Firstly TVRCC third party insurance - this effectively covers third party personal injury, loss of use of the runway, damage to a glider/plane etc (amongst others). Provided by TVRCC.

MOD Insurance and Defence Estates License - Covered by TVRCC

Your own vehicle insurance - you need to ensure that if you have an accident your insurance company isn't going to wash their hands of you i.e. It will need to cover you for time trialling off the public highway for at least third party costs of recovery and clean up. This is normally a specific exclusion that you can pay to have relaxed. In essence if you have an accident then you must be able to remove your car from the airfield and clear up the mess that is left (i.e. the fibreglass) as it is a well used runway.

The above is all a bit more restrictive than I had hoped for but in today's litigious society and era of public bodies having to exploit all "business opportunities" I have been unable to arrange this "by the back door" as had been envisaged. Costs however are as low as I can get and if the event goes ahead it may give us or the TVRCC an in to develop a full day track day on the site, which the setup is ideal for.

However from my experience of the open days at Castle Coombe where you pay £35 for a 20 minute session I think the £25 is good value.

I hope this clarifies things

Thanks for clarifying that. I just wanted to have it clear in my head so I know what to ask my insurance company for, as the amount they request will determine whether or not I can join in (although I really want to!)

Once again well done for all the hard work Mark!

I'm ok on the insurance (Hagerty) but thought I'd ask if wearing a helmet is required on the day.
No track experience so this should be a good intro for me.

Helmet optional as not racing around a circuit that is of course unless your insurance requires it.

Due to some people having trouble with the insurance aspect (I am also Hagerty so have no issues) I have asked a few questions of the RAF Station wrt simplifying it to a disclaimer that states that each participant realises that they are liable for removal of any "wreckage" from the site in the event of an accident. Basically this will be the car as we have access to cleaning materials and tools such as brooms etc and instructions for fire will be to drive onto grass area if possible. Hopefully I'll get a response early this week.

It has been known for damaged vehicles to be removed by a group of mates from tracks so they can be recovered by normal means.

Obviously one could not condone this on a public forum, but it's worth mentioning smile

(Mark, I've just read your email - been on-sites most of the week so no private email access - cheque written and in envelope)

This is why I've asked the question above really as clean up (ex major fire on runway) should be a simple case of brooms and possibly cat litter for oil. Basically hopefully we can allow each to take the risk as he/she feels fit (mine will be insured fully for time trialling)
