Smoked rear lights fitted...
Discussion
Having seen Qualia's and RichardR's S's in the plastic... I'd always like the look of the smoked rear lights, so when the price of them dropped to a very reasonable £40 (+ £6.50 P&P) at Nomad I decided to go ahead and buy them. The ones are "E" marked (and road legal) as they have an orange reflector in the indicators... which also means you don't need to buy any coloured bulbs.
So, this is how we started off...
Before
So the carpet was pulled back, the bulb holders carefully removed and then I started to undo the six bolts around the lights. That done, I then had to scrape away enough silicon sealant to coat a bathroom and then gently push the unit out... then it was time to do the other one
During
So with a bit of care I cleaned up the holes left by the lights, removed the dead silicon sealant and made sure the drainage pipes from the boot were securely sealed.
With a bit of care the back of the new units were treated to silicon sealant before being pushed home and bolted in place. A bit more sealant around the edges of the lights, a quick tidy up, replace the bulb holders, check all the lights work... and here you go...
After
I don't think the photos do them justice... think it looks very smart, maybe even a bit more
As a bit of a comparison, I sloted a smoked cluster and an original one as a before and after pic...
Both

Nice job!
As you say, the photos don't do them justice, particularly with the overall smoked effect. The photos make the contract between the white, red and orange sections appears greater than it actually is (I found a photo of the rear 3/4 seemed to show the effect better).
They're a definite improvement, and also help to mask the origin of the lights slightly IMHO!
I look forward to seeing the full effect in the flesh at some point.

You could have gone completely mad Podie, see here www.quadconversions.com/ford_escort_mk4_clear_and_smoked.htm
These afterburners got me thinking though www.quadconversions.com/ford_Escort_Mk4_Aftreburner_rear_lights.htm Completely illegal in the 2 per side layout, though (no reflectors, no reverse light, no fog light).
But then I found these www.roguesystems.co.uk/
go to "products" then "components. With these you should get 3 per side and the prices aren't bad too. I just need to re-model the rear a bit.
