Rear hood removal....Pivot problem

Ever since I had my rear screen replaced as part of my insurance claim back in September...The drivers side Bolt or Pivot has been rattling like a snake...
Its got to the point where I really need to do something about it as its annoying me silly...
I looked into it a few weeks ago and gave up after dropping at least two penny washers down the inside of the rear wing..
The bolt which goes through the roof strut and through the inside skin is about 2 inches long with the not and washers in the void between inner and outer wing..
How the bl00dy eck do you manage to change the bolt for a shorter one as well as put penny washers and a new nut on without losing either the washers, nuts finger tips or your patience...?
Has anybody removed theirs or changed the pivot..?
Its probably something I can tinker with at Austec when I am up there next week....

Took the hood off for the respray and yes its a bit of a bugger to keep hold of the bold and washer. I believe we lost a couple of washers abd of course being a tvr they are not all the same so yours may well be worse that mine. Get the wife to help, and if you loose some nuts, etc, you can always blame her.
My son helped me do mine as I like you became frustrated, so its a two man job.

You can also try superglueing the nut to spanner to start it. (and the washer to the nut too if you like)

Just avoid gluing yourself to the spanner (been there too......)
Yep. This approach worked fine for me too. One-man job. But being a clumsy clot i dropped the spanner down the sill, managed to get it out though. Never though of gluing myself to the spanner - next time

Push the new bolt through, and slip the washer on. Hold the new nut with a pair of long nose pliers.

dave, i did this too with my old S3 - just about managed to get enough finger on the bolt to hold the "other" side and then pushed the bolt through. patience is required IIRC
