Guys - another one from me! E Reg S1 2.8i - is there a seal or gasket that goes between the exhaust manifold & exhaust header? My Haynes Capri 2.8i manual says something like "please note, the later models dont need a seal" but don't clarify what's a later one.

Also it's different either side - see pics..

nearside.. male end to manifold, female exhaust header (sort of what I'd expect):

but offside.. female & female

This normal..any comments?

cheers all
Ed

I don't think it is a gasket as such, if you look at your first picture there is a sealing ring stuck in the manifold with a matching taper to the down pipe and in the second picture the sealing ring is missing, so basically there should be 1 sealing ring per manifold to mate to the downpipe.
Cheers.....Tony..

TVR parts list calls it an "olive" two per car, part no. 025S 025A (probably not much use now ?)

From my memories of messing with cars many years ago they are best assembled with a smear of exhaust paste and plenty Copperslip on the studs

Just beware with those olive thingmybobs - I am pretty sure the S1 uses 2.3 V6 cortina manifolds (which are extremely rare now) - I'm guessing there's a chance they are a smaller diameter than the 2.8 Granada ones.

Those olives are quite common across many makes of cars, both my Mercs and (IIRC) Citroen Xantia had them - not always at the manifold though. If you get the one out the nearside your local motor factors or exhaust fitters should be able to match them for size and as said above smear with exhaust assembly paste. then the two flanges clamp down onto the olive tight. Problem with these though is the "flange" areas tend to rust and fail - on my first Merc I cut out and fitted an oversize joining pipe for this reason (the arrangement was between the 2nd and third section of exhaust)
