Possibly buying an S Series

I'm looking into the possibilities of buying an S Series as a second fun car in a few months time but was hoping to get some pointers as to which to choose, what to look for, that sort of thing. I'll be budgeting around £5000 to buy, insure and make any minor repairs the car might need after purchase.

Which model is the best to look at, S1, S2 or S3?

Would deffinatly be worth consideration.

On a personal level I would go for an S2 or S3 with preference for the dash layout of the S2

The main consideration is the the chassis condition - get a good 'um and the rest is easy to fix if need be

Insurance as a classic (second car) will be about £150

I am biased but I've now grown to prefer the S3/4 V8S style dash.

Yeah I did see that but it's a bit soon for me, I'll be looking to buy around September at the earliest really.

Yes you will have to pay more - there has to be some advantages to getting old!

Im 26 and insurance for my s3 is £240 a year fully comp 5000 miles a year and I have 3 points. That was through classic line.

you should also try MSM for insurance. I bought mine at 27 I think and paid about £250. I always found MSM very competitive. My S2 was great value, great to drive, made a great noise and was reliable and cheap to run.

For £5k, there is no other sports car which offers so much.

And they look great.

I found getting in the S3 easier with the long doors, but I am 6ft 1 ish, 100 kilos and 58 years old. I like the S3 dash but this is personal preference. Go for a structurally sound car. Make sure that the outriggers have been replaced or if original (unlikely) they are sound. Body and chassis condition is really important, mechanicals slightly less so as they can be replaced more easily. Bear in mind that a respray on a tatty car can run into thousands. You also need to consider what is important to you- some people are happy to drive a 'lived in' example whereas others would want everything to be perfect..... Colour can be important for some. Also, bear in mind your own capability for diy repairs, not only skill level but also tools, money and most importantly, time. I think that S series are great and some of my drives have been worth the purchase price of my car alone for the satisfaction which they have given to me. If you in the Midlands you are welcome to have a ride in mine and of course, kick the tyres....

Thanks for all the info, due to my current financial situation I'm going be putting this on the back burner for a couple of month but I hope to be a fully fledged member of the S Series owners club by the end of the year.
