S3 Dimmer

Hi
Anyone got a S3 that has a dash dimmer switch underneath the dash board - right hand just under the steering wheel?

If so do you know what the part number is or where I can get a new one from?

Hi Mate and welcome to the forum

I'm surprised no-one has responded yet but I dont think the dimmer is standard as I believe the cars were originally fitted with housebricks on the engine side bulkhead to act as resistors so you had three switch positions for the dash lights - Off - Dim - Dimmer
I have been thinking of replacing this arrangement with a rheostat that I have from an Pajero 4x4 but have never got around to it...

maybe you should post a picture of the switch and someone might recognise it ?

my instrument lights controlled by one of the rotary switches on centre console (1990 S3), as already said dim - dimmer - and might aswell be off !

purely a guess but could yours be something someone has fitted and not factory fit ? does wiring to it look "original" ?

The later S3s, with the rocker switches on that central panel, have the rotary dimmer switch under the dash as kevroe describes. No idea where its from though.

All it does is switch the resistors in and out of circuit. If its not working I'd check the terminations on them first, they get pretty well corroded.

If its just a three position rotary switch you need then look at pages 70-71 here...

I recall the first Vauxhall Cavaliers had the same switch, it wasn't a three position one, but worked like a traditional light dimmer.
