My S has been at my local garage for 2 weeks and they can't figure out whats wrong with it. When cold it sounds fine but when its warm there is a loud rattle from the engine. loudest at about 2500rpm. Vague I know but thought it might sound like something that someone else had had happen. Any ideas?

Is the oil pressure really low when hot?
Had it on my old granada and it was terminal - it was the main and big end bearings that were dead
If oil pressure is reasonable doubt it will be this.

Its not high! About half way. Never really noticed how high it used to get unfortunately.

Is that a hot or cold pressure?
My old granny would get just above a quarter cold, when hot the needle was below the red, it didn't even move!

Two weeks and professional mechanics can't diagnose and sort an engine noise on a "run of the mill" engine ? time to find another garage IMHO .

To be fair I dont think he's done much but changed the oil so far. Said he would investigate further today. If not its coming home and becoming a big ornament in the garage!

Could you define "rattle" a little more ? presumably its not a tapping noise ? tappets... and
where abouts in the engine do you think its coming from ? front back upper lower ?
what oil was in before and in now ?
has the timing been changed ?
is it in the engine ? not a split manifold ?

sorry for all the questions but without hearing it, its difficult to diagnose so the more info the better...

Not tappets. Louder, more 'tinny'. Location wise I dont really know; I can only be as vague as its sounds a like its coming from right hand side (drivers side)!

Dont know what oil was in it but it was very thick although Im sure it had only been in about a year and therefore done a max of 500 miles!

Timing not been changed but garage didnt seem to think that was it. When I first took it in he started talking about little ends but wasnt sure. Said he thought it wasnt big end due to being too loud or too quick or vice versa!

As you can tell my understanding of this is pretty poor! :0)

If the thick oil was 20/50 mineral and is now 15/40 fully synthetic its going to sound rattly by comparison in my experience and that would fit with being worse at 2500 rpm and hot...

tinny doesnt sound little ends

you/he should stick a wooden rod in one lug and touch the engine with the other end of the rod to try to locate the source of the noise, maybe try sticking a small rubber tube (stethescope) in later (take the wood out first wink ) to see if its a leaking/split exhaust manifold on the drivers side ?

are you sure theres nothing outside of the engine thats rattling ? a loose nut somewhere or a pipe touching something ?

good luck with your search...

Last time I heard something like that on one side of the engine it was a blowing manifold - and worse when HOT!!

I've just located a rattling noise in the engine bay in my Cerbera. And it turned out to be rattling brake pads.
When I was looking for the noise someone suggested holing some pipe ( I used a spare 1 meter lenght of copper pipe) against the engine and the other end against my ear to listen for any unuasual internal noises, It works, and might help you locate the noise to a specific are.

Had 2 opinions now. A local garage says it could be crank or cam and needs full engine out strip down/refurb. Second opnion today; Apparently they one of the pistons might have a damaged skirt and thats whats causing the rattle. Apparently not too much of an issue. Oil pressure drops a lot though which concerns me but been told that thats normal as the oil thins as the engine warms. (seems odd as the pressure is always high in my focus.)

It doesn't matter which opinion you go with - that engine is coming out regardless if you want to fix it.

Alternatively if you want to sell put it on ebay as is with the problem declared - whatever it makes will be a better financial return than spending a fortune on the engine - thats cash you will not get back.

The third option is to try and source a known good engine - but there's still some pot luck involved.

You could try a post on the wedge forum as I think some of the 2.8 wedges have been converted to V8 - so someone might have an engine tucked away at the back of their garage.

I just want to establish if the car is ok to drive and will just rattle a bit. Or if it is likely to discombobulate at some point whilst driving! This is where the 2 opinions I have been given differ.

Join the RAC... drive the car and just watch the gauges, listen to the rattles and dont take the wife anywhere in it (they dont understand breakdowns) and see how it goes... Take a run out to Snake Pass on wednesday night and you could benefit from a nice run to try it out and some opinions when we here the noise too...

If its an engine out anyway you cut it as Chris says then its just a case of how far you can go in the old engine before the inevitable...

good luck

I'd just drive it. I still continued to thrash my 2.3 granada and it never gave up - I just got offered an engine for 50 quid so it seemed rude to refuse.

By the way does it do the rattling when you start it from cold regardless of revs - if its bearings it will rattle until the oil gets circulating.

You could chuck a litre of EP90 gear oil in the engine (you'll have to drain some out first) - it works wonders as its so thick. Not that I ever tried that. rolleyes

If it goes pop at some point then source another engine - or sell it broken.

Doesnt rattle when cold. Only when warmed up. Can only hear it around 2500revs. No noise on overrun.
