Sorry, another valuation related question.

I’m off to see a V8S tomorrow. I’m told it has had dry use only throughout most of its life. No chassis work since new though, so the risk that however well looked after it will need some work in the near future.

Otherwise unmolested and looks to be in good nick, recently serviced, etc.

So, it will be very fortunate if it has survived 18 years without needing any chassis work, what would be a fair price?

Also, had a quote for insurance from Lancaster: 6,000 miles, commute to work included, windscreen and euro cover, agreed valuation - £342. It seems pretty good to me.

Thanks again for any advice.

Hi

I have the same car and pay £247 with Carole Nash.
This includes breakdown cover and fully comp.

I have full no claims (although not needed for this) nd no point/IAM member.

Only a fool would answer this...

..so here goes!

There's not much detail there to base a valuation on! There are (or have been recently) several V8Ss on sale here and elsewhere, with ASKING prices in the range £6k - £9k. They don't seem to be selling very well at the moment. A fair price is what you are prepared to pay and what the seller is prepared to accept. You need to strike a balance between getting the car you want and getting a bargain.

Don't be too paranoid about chassis. I've had two Ss recently with solid original chassis. Check it certainly, as well as you can, but remember you are buying a car, not a chassis, and a blown engine can be easily more expensive to fix than a chassis (which only seems to suffer at the outriggers apart from real basketcases).

See it, drive it, only you can decide what it's worth TO YOU. Then buy it and enjoy!!!smile

Good luck, and let us know how you get on!!

Will do!

You're right, it's the "it will cost all I have, if it goes wrong straightaway I'm up a creek" scenario. However, if the worst comes to the worse I'll sell the wife or something.

Cheers.

If you can work a spanner don't worry about it - these cars are very simple and there's always an economic solution to a problem if you need one.

Very interesting afternoon.

The sound of the V8 and the smell of the leather was just like the Chimeara we had a few years back! Fantastic!

Car has been owned by the same guy for the last 15 years. Basically not done a lot to it, so just as you would expect a 17 year old car to be.

Good points: The engine ran fine, temperature got up towards 100, but I think that's normal. The fan came on when we returned from the test run. Paintwork is generally pretty good. Interior needs freshening up and cleaning up, (new carpets wouldn't go amiss) but generally ok. The electrics worked save for stage 2 on the heater. Recently serviced and I saw the bill. No advisaries save for a problem with the starter motor relay.

Bad points: The alarm has been disconnected as the battery drained. The immobiliser worked but it took a bit of fiddling to get the car to start. The outriggers are pitted and rough but I couldn't detect any holes. However, I suspect they will need work fairly soon. Speedo doesn't work. Reads 37,000 miles but has done nearer 43,000. Gearbox seemed a bit notchy. Windscreen delaminated, but not a huge issue.

Guy wants £7,500. My initial reaction is that it needs too much work to put it in top condition, and I'm not great with a spanner! I could get a top S3 for considerably less, albeit missing that glorious V8!

However, I would appreciate any comments! Thanks again guys.

I would offer him 6k for it, then speedy cables will sort the speedo and you've enough left to have the outriggers sorted when they need it. In the meantime get a chip rr fitted and a new windscreen

Unfortunately, in all the excitement I forgot one fundamental - no PAS. If my wife with the dodgy left shoulder is ever to drive the car (and she loves them too) then this is a must, and this car doesn't have it.

Was it available/could it be retro-fitted?

Talk of chip and remap is also dangerous. Did that with a WRX and ended up with induction kit, decat, coilovers, grooved discs, etc, etc. Why? I can't answer that as I still didn't like the car much and could have just bought an Sti. Happy days.

Well, PAS or not I've gone and done it!! I didn't buy the car referred to earlier in this thread, but another where the body was off and outriggers repaired two years ago, all the electrics work save the front driving lamps (new last year) and the mirrors. More importantly, serious approval from the long-suffering other half.

Drove from Sussex to Cornwall this afternoon, 270 miles with the top down all the way, but not a single other TVR the whole time!! Where were you all? It's been 9 long years to wait for a cheery wave.

Well done! Is it Fred Penfold's old car by any chance? It looks a good 'un. I'm quite taken by the chrome trim around the bonnet air scoops - any idea what was used?

It was and I think it is!

I will be on here with a variety of questions soon, but I'm just going to let it sink in first.
