Top end or bottom end or complete engine refurbish, I assume it is a 2.8 S1, are you wanting to improve its performance ? or just keep it stock. your budget will limit what you do to it.

Does it need a refurb, is there a problem? Or is it just something you are considering? A refurb could just be somebody changing plugs and adjusting the valve train to a total strip down, overhaul and rebuild. Obviously the total rebuild costs a lot more then replacing a few top end parts. I build these engines to so feel free to pm me.

Metal in the oil and a noise from the engine when warm to me needs a full strip down to see whats going wrong.
You could be looking at at least a £1000 for a full rebuild depending on the parts you need to replace, I would think about finding another engine that is in good order and just swap out but first you need to see the engine insides, it could be anything from a bearing on its way out or even a oil pump shaft, anything but you need to find it before you run the engine again.

Heck, that's a lot, I charge less then that, a lot less. I've just built a TT 2.8, forged pistons, ported heads etc and it was less then £4k and I'm not vat registered. What does anyone suppose the car is worth to sell with an engine needing refurbing? I imagine it's not much!
Its a red 1988 E. Has done 43k miles. Had circa £1k worth of gaz shock and springs a couple of years ago. Chassis was stripped and painted a couple of years ago (car has been garaged and only done about 2k miles since). It did win Best S1 at S Club Heaven 2 but there are better examples around now. Unfortunately there is a rip in the seat on the passenger side and some crazing in the fibre glass on the bonnet.

How much ! even if that included fitting seems a lot ?I had my S1 2.8 fully rebuilt by specialised engine and its been well worth it. www.specialisedengines.co.uk

Had a 2nd opinion today. Apparently they think one of the pistons might have a damaged skirt and thats whats causing the rattle. Apparently not too much of an issue. Oil pressure drops a lot though which concerns me but been told that thats normal as the oil thins as the engine warms. (seems odd as the pressure is always high in my focus.)
