Lovely afternoon for taking the roof off the 'S' and being towed around the Hampshire countryside behind a Volvo. Intermittent misfire becomes terminal misfire. Now there seems to be a complete absence of whirry fuel pump noises normally heard when switching on the ignition. Fuse is fine and connections to fuse and yellow relay all seem good; connections to pump also seem sound. If anyone has the prime suspects on this one I'd be grateful before I put on my little cap with 'E' for electrician on it and challenge my AVO meter to a game of find the voltage. Looking on the bright side at least it didn't happen last Thursday night on the way back from the Hants club meet in the driving snow.

same thing happened to me recently and it Sounds like your fuel pump,
best way to check is run a 12 volt feed direct from battery, also worth taking earth from battery also if it fires up you have a relay/electrical problem if not almost certainly fuel pump about £95.00 for a new one ,also check the wiring before you disconnect as my cabling was reversed for some reason.

Yep I had the same thing. Fortunately it was only the relay. Stick your ear up to it - you should hear it click when you turn the ignition.

Thanks for the help guys. All seems ominously quiet in the relay department so I've got one on order for tomorrow. There had also been evidence of a slight misfire over the last couple of weeks implying a slow deterioration of whatever part whereas most threads on here indicate pumps tend to fail catastrophically. Will try that before I move round to the more expensive pump department.
