Unidentified black dial...

On the underneath of the steering column I have a black dial with a couple of white dots on it. I can turn the knob, but have no idea what it does.

Also, the driving lamps (fitted last year) don’t work. They are Ring replacements. I have no idea what they are wired into. When are they supposed to come on? Is there are separate switch for them?

Sorry for the dense questions, but I'm trying to get to grips with the car. I have ordered a copy of Steve Heath’s guide and hopefully it will arrive later this week.

Not sure about the knob under the steering wheel (my car has the knob in the driver's seat according to a few) but on the lamps under the bumper, they can be wired in two ways:

1. Fog lamps (which is what mine are) - they come on only with side lights or dip beam, and have a separate fog light switch; or

2. Driving lamps - they come on only with main beam, and don't therefore need a separate switch.

They have different glass lenses - the fog lamps give a wide spread of light near the car, driving lamps give longer-ranmge to supplement the (pretty poxy) standard main beam.

My car doesnt have the additional lights but my rotary fog light switch has three positions - Off - rear fogs on - nowt ? I wondered if this (unused) third position would normally be Front and Rear fogs on ?

I think it is the dimmer control for the dash lights .

That rotary dial is the dimmer for the instrument illumination the three positions are dim, dimmer or bloody useless, I leave mine in the normal dim position which is just about useless but the brightest they will go

The second switch from the left (on mine anyway, they should be marked though) on the center console should turn them on, then they are on when main beam is.

Thanks fellas, one mystery solved. Now to work out why the lights don't come on.
