Hi All,
Windscreen is coming out tomorrow, I know I can get a new one but it has a green tint on the top, I don't really want a green tint so where can I get a new one clear with no tint.

Hi Norman,
I was told a long time ago the cortina windscreen would fit a S, I have looked but found no reference to this.

We can supply clear glass windscreens, usually from stock. It's not a Cortina screen by the way.

Bit of a thread resurrection but found out a titbit of information that may be useful for others. I tried to get my clear windscreen replaced but what turned up didn't fit. I was told by an ex-TVR guy that it's from a Capri but there are two types under the same part number; one for British Capris, the other for German Capris. The two aren't the same shape but either fit any Capri by modifying the rubber. Obviously this can't be done on the S as they are bonded onto the frame. The 'proper' ones are currently on 10 weeks leadtime.

Why do you say that ? It was Mobile Windscreens who had the screen that didn't fit. You could put your finger between the body and the screen and it was the correct part number. What would be your explanation ?

Didn't fit what, a Capri or an S ?

Just find it a little hard to believe that Ford made two different bodyshells (would they not have all come out same plant whether for UK or European market), two different screens and two rubbers?

If one screen was larger how would the rubber be "trimmed" to suit? From my experience of fitting windscreens (and I did do a few in the days before bonding took over)there was no way half an inch could be lost or gained.

I can accept there may be a difference between mk1 2 and 3 Capri's and screen was for wrong one and, just possibly, fitter was trying to cover his mistake of ordering wrong one?

and anyway, it ain't a flippin' Capri windscreen !

OK - take it easy.

They had the correct part number and it didn't fit my car, which has caused a lot of logistical issues. I was given the information on the different screens by the guy at Surface Design who used to put the S together so assumed it was good information that others may find useful.

Sheesh, won't bother next time.

The screens for the S1-S4 and V8S are all the same shape and size as the 1981-87 Capri Mk3 but the black obscuration band is completely different. The 3000S screen is a different part number and the screen is unique to that model.

There was only one bodyshell/windscreen aperture on the Capri from 1969 to 1987. The cars from 1969 to 1981 (Mk1 and Mk2) were rubber glazed and the screen was therefor smaller than the later Mk3 screen which was direct glazed (bonded).

As to the reasons why the screen that was sent up for gifdy's car was the wrong shape, I have no idea without further investigation. If the screen is back in Bristol, I will get it checked against others that we have in stock from a different batch. We have fitted loads of S screens with no problem but recently there was another thread on PH from someone in the East Midlands who had another Pilkington screen that was out of shape; not supplied by us incidentally. I will check with the factory to see if they have had any production issues or complaints from the recent batches.

Thanks for the clarification Phil. Looks like the info was only partially correct but is a flippin Capri windscreen ( sort of ). If you get to the bottom of it please let me know. I've had to put the old one in to get the car finished but still want to put a fresh one in when there is less time pressure.

gifdy, I have checked the screen that you returned against the others in stock and there is no difference in shape. I then rang the Pilkington factory and they have no reported problems during the last two years. We are now going to return our stock for checking against the original tooling to confirm that the shape matches the checking fixtures and bending tools.
Unfortunately, we don't have a Mk3 Capri screen in stock to check against.

Would be very interested to hear the outcome of the screen checks at Pilkington, I had a very similar issue a few weeks back. Tried 4 screens from two different sources and all had the same issue ie they did not fit, particularly at the bottom in the center of the screen, the black mask around the edges of the screen and where the mirror fits was also very different to the screen that came out. I have a new screen in and it has been fitted as best as they can, I can't fault the installer but it is not a good fit when compared to the original.

Have now had a response from Pilkington and they have agreed that onje of the two screens that we sent to them was out of shape and the other was not 100%. Both have been scrapped and they are now making a new batch. It's difficult to get a delivery date at the moment because of factory shutdown for holiday and the adidtional work caused by the recent riots. The factory is one of very few sources for anti-bandit screens for the Police personnel carriers.
Making windscreens is labour intensive and quite a slow process (several of them actually) and the Police screens took priority over everything else.
