Hi guys,

Another S2 off the road for a little while with crumbling outriggers and other nasty cracks! So i'll keep everyone updated as the work starts and goes on. Hopefully this will be helpful for anyone in the future with a crumbling S chassis in the Manchester area.

Looking at having a partial body lift so will see if I can get pics posted too as we go along.

Also want to thank Mep12345 for his fantastic website.

Well just had my quote through for a partial body lift and some welding etc and im speechless!! eek

Wanted to run the run the quote by some of you and see if you think the hours of labour quoted seem right!?? Below is the quoted work and hours...

Lift body from chassis sufficient to gain access to repair chassis = 10hrs labour

Replace the N/S outer chassis rail & front out rigger = 12hrs labour

Replace the central gearbox crossmember = 5hrs labour

Suspect that we will need to replace the O/S outer chassis rail = 10hrs labour

Suspect that the rear chassis out riggers with body mounts will require repairs but we will need to investigate this area once body is lifted Refit body to chassis = 16hrs labour

I can tell you I paid around £700 for a single outrigger to be replaced and the garage managed to do it without needing to do any kind of lift - if that helps. And that was London prices including full chassis waxoyl.

Hi Tinks,

Did you have the work done around the manchester area? Any info would be greatly appreciated to reduce my costs and stop the "I told you so" look the wife keeps giving me =)

Lifted body on my S last year and as we speak I have the body lifted on my Chimaera, both comfortably done in a day, but if the 10 hours includes putting it back on I'd say thats about right.

Cutting out rot, re-fabricating and painting is time consuming and if n/s needs doing I'd be most surprised if o/s doesn't reveal some issues when body lifted ?

Whats wrong with the gearbox cross member ? Usually enough oil leaks around there to stop anything rusting ?

The later chassis had a bolt on removable gearbox cross member. This allows easier gearbox removal. I wonder if the rotten item could be cut away and the lugs for a removable section welded back? Although I don't think it would save you money at this stage. My chassis is still bodyless and has the bolt on type of cross member. I could take some dimensions/photos if you like.
Good luck

Refitting the body was also included in the last section where they quoted 16hrs labour!!

As for the cross members it looked like there was a split in it if i remember rightly. There was lots of issues when they let me underneath to look...I couldnt see much through my tears

Hi,

I have a 1990 S2 so not sure if thats late enough for the chassis you were mentioning (really have no idea). Think i'll b looking for other quotes but if it is the chassis type you suggested i may take you up on the offer of pictures in the future.

Many thanks

Karl

I believe the change is S3 on rather than date of manufacture as the S onwards have a slightly modified chassis for the longer doors and other improvements

Just a few Pics of the nasty rust taking over my chassis. After the first crazy quote I posted a request for a better one so now the car is in the hands of Ivor and his garage smile Above are some of the pics he has taken and I'll post more as work is done.

They have also found I need a new rear spring so I was wondering if anyone was selling an old but good set? OR where can I get a reasonably priced pair.

Thanks guy

Can't believe how much rust there is in those pics, just lifted mine and luckily only had to replace about 2 foot of outrigger on the near side. No rot at all on the rear swinging arm mounts. I think they need to be caught early before the first holes appear and water gets into the tubes.
One thing I noticed when I lifted mine was that the front body mounts (in footwell) were soaked with water even though the car had not been driven in the wet for about a month. That indicates that the water which runs under the bonnet and down the bulkheads was the most probable source. I intend to look into this and see if it can be redirected as my car lives outside. Ideas anyone?
