car spluttering at 4500rpm

Can any one shed any light on this, my car runs faily smooth through the rev range untit 4500-5000 then depending on how the car feels, one day it will go to 5000rpm then sound like the rev limiter is kicking in and then on a really bad day only 4500rpm. I have changed the coil, leads, plugs, rota arm and disy cap, I can not time the car using a timing light the marks are way way out, so have to do it bit by bit trail and error, even static seems to be not 100% and defo not on the markings...think that the pulley is 90deg out? but that can be sorted its the low reving that is getting on my nerves. (When should the limiter kick in)

I'm pretty sure mine goes to 6k had a Astra once that wouldn't rev past 4k was worn out cams.

Could be fuel too.

Thanks for that but dont think its fuel, its been doing it for some time and very rearly use the same garage to fill up and done 2k miles in the last 4 months, hope its not the cam's, i am planning to take it off the road in a few more months and do have plans for engine then like fix the oil leak at the back of the engine, Oh joy!

No worries rhe reply was more to say where mine reved to. also I meant fuel supply to engine ie fuel pressure.

fuel supply could be the cause, not thought of that one, might try some cleaner for the injectors and one of them power boost valves.

I think you have answered your own post - until you have the timing sorted out don't go looking for another problem that may not even be there.

think your right, thats my problem always looking for some think else. will have to put up with it for time being till get the timing sorted.

may be worth checking the filter in the base of the fuel tank these are known to clog up<fuel starvation>

right timing all sorted, borrowed a good timing gun, runs like a one litre car with the timing all set up correct, have to advance the timing quite a bit to actually get some good power out of the engine, is there any thing that i am missing or is it time to take it to a garage?

Did you put the car into service mode to set timing?

no, how do you do that and why? is there a good print out of setting the timing on the web that anyone knows?

Have to agree (from experience) that what you're experiencing does sound like ignition timing.
