Hi

I have just made myself the proud owner of a 1989 series 2. The car has a few cosmetic problems but does appear sound. It drives well and mechanically everything appears fine.

One of the first problems I want to sort out is the fit of the bonnet. A previous owner has fitted bonnet pins, which I hate, and want to get rid of. There has also been some work done to the bonnet hinges which appear to have been rewelded but the metal used is about 22 gauge bent into a channel for the boonet hinge pivots and have been welded into postion permanently, so there is no chance of any adjustment to them. What I want to do is to remove these and reweld some square section to the original size and dimensions. I can fabricate these but could do with the right measurements.

Could anyone here measure the brackets which are welded to the chassis, and as they are fitted at an angle give me an idea of the angle at which they fit in relation to the the chassis rail. I would also appreciate some fairly close up and general photos of the actual installation around the bonnet hinges on an unmodified car so that I can get it right. I have the Steve Heath book but dont think that the illustrations are in enough detail to help. It would save a lot of trial and error if I could actually see what it should look like.

Any assistance would be gratefully received.

Regards

Graham

Here you go mate, some recent pictures of my offside hinge... hopefully you can scale the dimensions from these, if not let me know and I'll get the measuring stick out wink

M12 rose joints are available for around a fiver each from McGills Motorsport and others. Black plastic cap is off office furniture partitioning.

Hi all

Thanks for the replies, the photo's are a great help. I think that I should be able to fashion something from that. The stainless ones look really good but are probably a little on the expensive side for now. I have more pressing areas of the car to spend some money on and ordinary mild steel well painted should do the job. But thanks anyway for the swift responses. Its good to know that you are not on your own when trying to decide the best way forward.

Many thanks

Graham

Any help ?

Hinges I made up myself using some sherical joints found on Ebay and moved them to the inside of the bonnet braces to reduce the leverage on the stud sticking out from the chassis bracket

That's a good idea...

As long as you don't need too much lateral adjustment.

I like it
