Coming back from BSG on Sunday I got stuck in traffic for ages on the A1. The temperature went up but stayed out of the red so I wasn’t too worried - the new alloy rad seemed to be keeping things under control. However, as soon as I got off the A1 and was able to open it up I found it crunched going into fifth. After getting home and letting it all cool down for a couple of hours I went out again and the crunch going into fifth had gone. The ‘box has ATF in it. The clutch master cylinder is right next to one of the exhaust manifolds so the hydraulic fluid must have got very hot when I was in the traffic jam. Would this have caused the problem? Any ideas?

The other possibility could have been the ATF in the gearbox getting hot and becoming very thin - the exhaust is very close to the gearbox (millimetres away).

Use of ATF in the Rover gearbox is nearly as contentious as which cap to put on the swirl pot! Some say its too thin and the gearbox can wear prematurely.

EP80 bog standard gear oil is 'normal' gear oil, I think thats what mine has in, it works OK a bit notchy into third.
I have bought 2 bottles of this but haven't put it in yet.
It was recommended by one or two people on the griff / chim forums

The LT77 gearbox in the V8S is basically a land rover V8 gearbox without the transfer box on the end.

Thanks Chris. I'd be very interested in hearing if it lives upto the claims. How difficult is it to change the 'box oil? Thanks again. Joe

I have done this today - if you have ATF already the difference it makes may not be so dramatic but on mine the difference is incredible - comparable to a modern car now.

Its dead easy to change - theres a drain and seperate filler plug up the side of the gearbox (driver side) - make sure you can get the filler undone before draining it off - and the drain plug is pretty big you'll need a big spanner or stilsons etc.

I added a foot of 10mm rubber hose to the end of the filler on the bottle so I could hold it horizontal to squeeze the oil out.

2 litres was just enough biggrin
