On a similar subject, just got the Sierra V6 workshop manual. From a quick skim it isn't that good for the 2.9 engine (mines an S3C)as it only covers this in an appendix. Is the Granada manual any better? Any other recommended manuals?

It sounds like you may have an earlier edition of the sierra manual - in my experience with other haynes manuals once a model has gone out of production they edit the manual and create a later edition so it is all combined and there is no longer a supplement.
What year range does your manual quote?
The sierra was produced roughly up to 1993 (K reg) - I bet your manual doesn't go as far as 93?

I've got a Haynes granada manual (from when I had one!) and it's so old that it's mainly the 2.8 engine - the whole 2.9 is a supplement!What year range does your manual quote?

I guess the sierra one is better - at least that also covers brakes, transmission, etc - the granada one different (in the detail - same basic layout / princi0les).

Lol I would have thought the B was essential that's kind of the point imho, like iPhone = Jesus phone. Books are just books. One happens to be factual and one is a nice story.

Big B, little b, not an issue to me but spotted a thread on (I think) the Chim forum where someone had an issue with it. Just trying to help us all get along!
As someone there posted - one's a work of fiction and one contains lots of useful facts, just decide which is which ;-)

B or b - note there are two editions with the second being more comprehensive.
My Haynes is Sierra up to '92 and has been useful.
the most useful reference by far though is this forum and its FAQ's and of course links to owners sites/blogs with detailed "How-To's" and "gotcha's"

I was going to say that but didn't want to appear immodest...Apart from answers on here to points I can help with, everything I've done to my car is written up on my web site (and I do mean everything!). The main problem is finding the bit you want - it's been over 7 years and even I am struggling to find stuff now! There is a "diary index" page (that needs to be updated) that points you (well, me) to most of the jobs - and a "how to" index for the bigger jobs.
It's there to share, if it's helpful, use it. Disclaimer - if you kill yourself copying my methods, don't come back and haunt me, that's all.

Get 'em for pound or two on ebay and at that price doesn't matter if you get them mucky !I got Granada one for engine and Sierra for brakes etc. Funnily enough one gives reasonably comprehensive guide to gearbox strip/rebuild while other says "best left to specialist" ?

Question - was yours a basket case or do I need to accept that if I were to buy an 'S' I might be working on it every other day?

I spend a lot more time on it than I have to - they do need more attention than a modern car, but most of it is (hopefully) improvement, not repair. Current holes in chassis excepted, of course.
